D-Day was planned to happen on June 5th. However, due to some nasty weather, the invasion was moved back a day.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered a prayer over the radio that got the attention of everyone and warned the American citizens of the invasion that was happening.
The 'D' in D-Day
Technically, the letter D means nothing. D-Day and H-Hour are military terms that are used to specify when something is going to happen. D-Day nowadays generally means the invasion of Normandy, on June 6th.
