Steps 5 & 6
7 Steps to Building a Language Rich Classroom
Content Objective
I will demonstrate how to build academic language in my classroom by planning at least three strategies, that include each of the following:
- Quizlet
- Vocabulary Magic
- Exit Ticket/Post-its Plus
Language Objective
I will write using the following stems:
- Something that is working well in my classroom is...
Something that is working well in my classroom is...
- Use this sentence stem to write about something that is going well in your classroom.
- Write your complete sentence on a post-it and stand up when you are ready to share.
- Share with someone sitting at another table.
- When both partners have shared, place your post-its on the exit ticket next to the number assigned to you (look on your QR code card).
Step 5: USE VISUALS AND VOCABULARY STRATEGIES THAT SUPPORT YOUR OBJECTIVES p. 35
- Photos, drawings, movie clips, graphic organizers, etc…all scaffold student understanding of new content vocabulary.
- Visuals also provide structured opportunities to use new words in context, increasing retention of new vocabulary and depth of understanding.
Vocabulary Match-up
- Take the cards out of your baggie.
- Match the English verbs to the French verbs.
- The first group to match them up correctly wins.

Step 6 & 7: HAVE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN STRUCTURED CONVERSATIONS p. 43
•Much more engaging because the process includes 100% student participation.
•Provides enough structure to get all students involved both physically and mentally.
•Maximizes “engagement” time in the classroom and minimizes single-student responses.
•Clearly define the purpose, plan and the process for each activity.
•Students gain a deeper understanding of content concepts.
