The Art of Communication
I still remember being "baptized by fire" early in my career. I left that conference with a chip on my shoulder towards the parent. After a few days of venting, I started to reflect. What I realized was, the parent had every right to ask questions. The parent, in a way, is the customer. As educators we must provide high quality customer service.
Once I started to adjust my view I began to prepare better for conferences.
And here lies the key!
My goal was to know my students so well that I could answer pretty much any and all questions.
As you prepare for Fall Conferences I would encourage you to -
1) Be Prepared! Can you share academic and social strengths and next steps?
2) Be Positive! As the teacher you have the ability to set the tone.
3) Ask Questions? Ideally conferences should be a conversation. Engage families in two-way dialogue. This will likely help you get to know your student on a deeper level.
