Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
In these challenging times, we can expect that kids could be waking up on the wrong side of the bed sometimes. This newsletter offers some school and district updates along with important information from Kimberly Bussey, Dacula Middle School Principal.
There is a team of people available to you for academic, technical, emotional, or economic support. Just ask for support and remember we are available. While we cannot create anything like a sense of normalcy, we want our families and students to feel connected and supported by the school community.
Please note that our meal and bus food program will end on Friday, May 15th. Please plan accordingly and if you haven't taken advantage of this program, please do. We love seeing you in the lunch line and at bus stops.
Key Messages:
- We aim to continue to Improve the digital learning experience
- Our job is to continue to prioritize key AKS
- We work to keep students engaged
- Plans are in the works to hold some kind of virtual end-of-year celebration virtually for all students. Please see the flyer below for information about our 5th grade virtual moving on ceremony!
Class lists will be shared in August, similar to how we did it last year.
This Wednesday from 11-12, I will be at the car rider lane to collect any gifts, cards, etc. that you would like to leave for any staff members. We will not have an end of year teacher gift collection, so please consider this as your pathway to show your appreciation. We will virtually celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week on May 4-8.
We miss you!

Kindergarten Registration
Online registration for new kindergarten students is underway. Parents and guardians of children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2020, are encouraged to begin the registration process. Families who are unable to obtain the required immunization and/or screening documents due to the COVID-19 situation will be given additional time to obtain those documents but should go ahead and begin the online registration process.
Promotion
GCPS wants to be sure that the move to digital learning does not have a negative impact on students. Grading and promotion practices will be designed to reflect that.
K-8: GCPS will base promotion on a student’s understanding and mastery of the AKS curriculum for his or her grade level. If a student is recommended to repeat a grade, the school or teacher will discuss it with the student’s family.
Attendance
Teachers are not taking attendance each day: however, they are monitoring which students are participating in digital learning and are reaching out to students who are not completing assignments. All student and staff attendance incentives for this school year were suspended on March 10.
