MLA Documentation News!

Below you will find a memo from IEW concerning the NEW MLA Eighth Edition that is coming out in March! I am beyond excited that documentation will become easier than ever for our students-Wendy b

The definitive guide for formatting and citation, the *MLA Handbook for
Writer's of Research Papers*, is seven years old. Now, in March 2016,
there's a new 8th edition! If is redesigned and simplifies documentation
for all the new publication media. Here's Amazon's description:

The Modern Language Association, the authority on research and writing,
takes a fresh look at documenting sources in the eighth edition of the *MLA
Handbook*. Works are published today in a dizzying range of formats. A
book, for example, may be read in print, online, or as an e-book--or
perhaps listened to in an audio version. On the Web, modes of publication
are regularly invented, combined, and modified. Previous editions of the *MLA
Handbook* provided separate instructions for each format, and additional
instructions were required for new formats. In this groundbreaking new
edition of its best-selling handbook, *the MLA recommends instead one
universal set of guidelines, which writers can apply to any type of source.*

Shorter and redesigned for easy use, the eighth edition of the *MLA
Handbook* guides writers through the principles behind evaluating sources
for their research. It then shows them how to cite sources in their writing
and create useful entries for the works-cited list.

*More than just a new edition, this is a new MLA style.*

Why The Strange Stories?

A few week's ago we read "A Jury of Her Peers" written by a woman aligned with the feminist movement and a worldview based on relativism. This week we read Poe's "A Tell Tale Heart." In a nutshell we are practicing recognizing an authors agenda. Do they want us to understand how others different from ourselves think? Well, that seems ok. But wait...are they also trying to lure us into thinking as they do? Adopting their ideas? Believing that right and wrong are based on the circumstances? Well...that's NOT ok, and we, as readers and consumers, need to be aware of exactly what it is we are taking in!

SAT Prep!

I was so impressed with the number of kids who chose to do the SAT prep! I gave out the answers today and encouraged them to look back over the ones they got wrong to figure out why. Half the battle is getting used to these types of passages .

The Hiding Place

I am planning to have the students read The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. It would be great if you could grab a copy in the next week. Kindle or ibook versions are fine!
