Hour of Code

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts.

Every year in December, Westside classes join millions of students around the world celebrating Computer Science Education Week with the Hour of Code.

The Hour of Code activities are available year-round. Try an activity here!

EARN A BADGE . . . or 12!

Every student in Westside has the opportunity to begin earning badges. Working towards earning a badge allows students to dig deep into topics and explore individual interest areas. Badges can be found in various subject and interest areas.

Earn 12 badges to achieve the acclaimed "Digital Dozen" and earn a prize and recognition! Choose from hundreds of badge options on the EY Website or choose one below to get kick started!

Digital Dozen Winners

Congratulations to Willa B. from Prairie Lane and Krish P. from Swanson who are the most recent Digital Dozen recipients for the 21-22 school year!

The Excellence In Youth Team is proud to announce Whitney L. from Rockbrook as the first recipient of the Digital Dozen award for this school year!

This award is presented to students who earn 12 of the digital badges on the EY Website (ey.westside66.org), which is available to students district-wide. It takes self-motivation, grit, and determination to earn these badges and Whitney should be proud of this accomplishment!

Mini Sparks are quick lessons that introduce learners to various topics. Sparks can be found under every subject area on the EY website. These activities require minimal supplies and make for a great family activity!

Looking for a really fun STEAM challenge that you can do at home? This mystery bag design challenge is perfect to do at home over break with a sibling or friend.

In this activity, you will use a bag of mystery materials (an assortment of recyclables and other random items) and then a challenge card stating a building challenge to do with those materials. Then you use those “mystery” materials to complete the challenge.
