Monday Memo

We Are Family - September 6, 2021

Dear Parents,

I recently was made aware that our theme t-shirts this year were missing an important flag - the American flag. The American flag is in our final design but was left out of the initial draft version, which was accidently used on our t-shirts. I have spoken with Avon Sports Apparel about a solution. They will be able to add an American flag to our existing shirts. There will be a day this month that students can bring their We Are Family shirts in to school for this update. I will let you know when the date is set.

I have been working on calendar updates for the next few months hoping to add some of our favorite, traditional events to our schedule. Right now, we have dates for our annual pet blessing in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi's feast day, the book fair, and a tentative date for a K-4 Christmas show (see below).

I hope that you all enjoyed a restful Labor Day holiday. Fall is just around the corner!

God bless,

Janet Abdoulaye, Principal

Support Mrs. Huther in the October Buddy Walk

The Huther Family will be walking in the Buddy Walk this year to support Down Syndrome of Indiana.

From Mrs. Huther: Caroline is a six year old who loves Kindergarten, bacon, and her Barbies. I could not image our family with out our Sweet Caroline.

I'm involved in the Buddy Walk® to support people with Down syndrome in my community. Please support my efforts as an advocate for the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

For every step I take and every dollar I raise, I am helping to create a culture that fully includes the more than 400,000 Americans with Down syndrome. Last year, more than $12.1 million dollars was raised by more than 305,000 Buddy Walk® participants worldwide.

Your support for the Buddy Walk®, either by walking with me or by making a donation, will help honor and celebrate people with Down syndrome.

Lunch Charges

Due to our participation in the National School Lunch Program, each child in our school can receive a free breakfast and a free lunch each day. There is no charge for the full lunch; however, there IS a charge when a student gets "extras." This may be a water, an extra piece of bread, or an extra entrée. These charges will be billed to your child's lunch account and you will receive a statement periodically. Lunch payments can be made via check to Saint Susanna School or through the www.myschoolbucks.com website.

Governor's COVID Update

Last week, Governor Holcomb issued an executive order regarding the COVID 19 pandemic and schools. Schools that have a consistent mask wearing policy in place, such as we do at this time, do not have to quarantine close contacts from the classroom. What this looks like for us is this -

  • If there is a close contact from the classroom, I would still contact trace and notify parents of the close contact. This student would not have to quarantine, but parents should be extra alert for signs of a COVID infection.

  • If there is a close contact from a time of the day that is unmasked, such as our lunch period or after school sports, then those close contacts will be quarantined for 10 days.

  • When we return to masks optional, then we return to quarantining all close contacts within a 6-foot radius of the COVID student or staff member.

I appreciate your continued cooperation in keeping our students safe and in school.

Parent - Teacher Conferences

Parent / Teacher Conferences are scheduled for October 13th and 14th from 1-6 PM. Please sign up for a conference with your children's homeroom teachers. At this time, we plan to offer in-person OR online video conferences, whichever best suit your needs. Depending on the situation with COVID in October, these may move entirely online. When signing up for conferences, please indicate if you would prefer an online conference.

Fifth Grade STEM Activity

Big picture
Fifth grade investigated their shadows today as they continue studying about the Earth and the Sun from the Indiana STEM Initiative kits. Students had to try to separate themselves from their shadows, touch their shadow head with their real hand, and rounded out the activity with a game of shadow tag.

Important EDM Information from Mrs. Bowman

For the safety of our students we require all adults picking up students from Extended Day Ministry to sign out at the front office. Since it is hard for the EDM staff to know everyone that may be picking up a student, the front desk staff may request to see your identification before we will release the student to you. Your patience and cooperation with this process is greatly appreciated.

Please note: During dismissal (3:05 pm – 3:35 pm) students cannot be picked up from the front office.

Powerschool Information

St. Susanna's PowerSchool has moved to the Archdiocese of Indianapolis server; therefore, your old link, bookmark, & account will need to be reset.

Please use the link below and the student access id & password found in the back-to-school packet Passwords Page to create a new account and link your student.

If you would like to access your PowerSchool account on your mobile phone, please complete the new account process on your computer first and then remove and re-download the PowerSchool App on your phone. The new code to connect to St. Susanna School on your mobile phone is TMHH.

You may use your new PowerSchool account to access accounts of any of your other children who attend Archdiocese of Indianapolis Schools. If you have other students attending public schools using PowerSchool, you will need to create a separate account at the link provided by that school.

If you need assistance, please email Kandi Carson at kcarson@saintsusanna.com

School Counselor

I am happy to announce that Saint Susanna has a school counselor available for our students on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Ms. Katie Evans comes to us from Catholic Charities. She is a licensed clinical social worker / therapist. She will work with students on an individual basis, as needed. She will also teach whole class social-emotional lessons on topics such as being a good friend, bullying, and other age-appropriate topics. Ms. Evans presence in our school is made possible by utilizing a portion of our EANS grant from the federal government over the next two school years.

Students may be referred to the Ms. Evans by teachers or the principal for a one-time visit. After that, parents must complete an consent form for continued visits. The consent form is available at the end of the Monday Memo or in the school office. You can reach Ms. Evans directly at kevans@saintsusanna.com

Box Tops for Education

Here’s how it works:

  • Step 1: Download the new Box Tops App (iTunes or Google Play) – it’s free
  • Step 2: Create a username and connect it to your child’s school
  • Step 3: Scan your grocery store receipt. Items with the new Box Tops label will be automatically credited to your school

Does this mean I should stop sending in my paper Box Tops that I have already clipped? No! Continue to send those to the school!
