NBES: Principal's Perspective
Moving from ordinary to extraordinary one learner at a time
Week in review
This week in kindergarten the students worked diligently on their reading strategies. This week we reviewed Eagle Eye and Lips the Fish. As students learn to read, it is vital they develop a repertoire of strategies. In first grade, the students used techniques to identify stating an opinion and used the compare and contrast Venn Diagram to identify difference and similarities with author Jan Bret. Our second graders were hard at work learning double digit subtraction and writing in their journals. They were also looking at how to be proactive when a problem comes your way, by discussing strategies for solutions. I was also very fortunate to listen to a few of our aspiring authors. Our third grade authors shared their stories of adventure adding in sound effect leads and our mathematicians learned about division. In fourth grade they attacked their morning work of journaling and correcting grammatical mistakes. They excitedly approached their reading and looked forward to telling me of the new books they had received throughout the holiday season. In fifth grade, the students continued to put their best foot forward as they shared their stop and jots. Most importantly, they continued to develop inferences while proving their thoughts from the text. In math, students used area models and standard algorithms. The sixth grade students thought like an author to create one more paragraph in the story and used their stop and jots to help them remember critical details of their reading. Proving why equations and inequalities work was the task in math. The ones I read proved to me our students are hard at work. After a long vacation and some very cold weather, the students at NBES kicked off 2015 extremely successfully.
