Do illegal immigrants have an unfair reputation?

What is an illegal immigrant?

They are immigrants who don't follow the law procedures of the country. Which means they also don't have the right documents to enter that country. Where as legal immigrants have the right documents and come for permanent residence. They can be found in extremely large numbers in several parts around the world. They are sometimes referred to as "illegal aliens" or "undocumented workers". Rudy Giluilani, former New York mayor argues, "What's needed in the House now is not a favor for Obama, but a strong conservative answer on one of the most vexing issues facing the nation."

What are some things that cause illegal immigrants to have a unfair reputation?

Most immigrants want to come to America for a better life but some can't afford to that. So, they need help to get into America. Some illegal aliens get have smugglers help with their illegal entry, but they owe the smuggler drugs or alcohol or money. While trying to pay off debt they get into criminal activity for stealing and drug distribution and more. Another reason illegal immigrants have an unfair reputation is that the 9/11 suicide bombers got into the U.S. by illegal immigration. Since then they have been very tight with security and don't want to repeat what happen on September ninth again.

So what are the effects of having an unfair reputation?

Well if you are a foreign born usually they will screen you for any previous criminal activities before they give you a green card. Then they are screened again for criminal activity before they enter the U.S. to make sure. Usually foreign students and professional workers are the least required to state under oath whether they had criminal history before they get a visa. Also 4.54% of the overall prison percentage in 2003 was illegal immigrants. That's one out of every twenty-one prisoners. This is giving illegal immigrants a bad rep. All the other immigrants didn't do anything, but they are getting all the blame.

So do they have an unfair reputation?

Yes they do have an unfair reputation. All they are trying to do is give a better life to their families. Some can't enter because they don't have enough money so they need help from smugglers. But they then have to pay them back with illegal items. And just because the 9/11 bombers were illegal immigrants doesn't mean that all of them are terrorists. Plus, illegal aliens do minimum wage jobs that other Americans don't want to do. So, in the end, illegal immigrants are just like you and me looking for success in the U.S.A.
