JBD FRIDAY FOCUS
June 7, 2019 "Embrace the Adventure!"
Message from the Principal
It's hard to believe that I am writing the final message for the 208-2019 school year! We have truly had an amazing year, despite the challenges. As this past week had us donned in blue and showing an outpour for our city and families, we can't forget the wonderful things that have taken place this year at John B. Dey!
We are about halfway through the construction and our cottage kids love their village! First and second grades are packing up to move to the new wing. The Curiosity Commons, formerly known as the library, is up and running. We loved having shows and events in our new gym and cafeteria. The courtyard is almost completely finished and will be a great place for recess and outdoor learning.
The students achieved great things. Among the many are the City Battle of the Books Champs, City, State, and Global DI particpants, a fabulous year with a super supportive PTA led by Susan Wilson, and individual student service projects that reached beyond the walls of JBD to help service men and women, the SPCA, Child Abuse victims, Hat and Glove drives, Treats for Troops,
and many more. Our preliminary SOL results look amazing and ALL of our students made significant growth this year academically and socially.
We couldn't be more proud of our school and your children. Please don't panic when you see the old front of the school looking demolished as that phase of the renovation is beginning! Just more summer progress underway and we are loving it.
Please enjoy the summer and please keep your students engaged in lots of reading activities, go to the library, limit screen time and encourage your children to try something new to boost brain development. It's important to have lots of family fun while resisting the urge to over schedule your kids. Keep bedtime and chore routines consistent as well as behavioral expectations. It's a tough balance, yet super meaningful to your children. We notice that students who have consistently read books and practice basic math concepts over the summer, are able to jump back into school in the fall ready pick up where they left off this year.
Thanks for all you do for your children. We LOVE our JBD Seagulls and their families.
Have a wonderful summer!
