SEL UPDATE
Next week in our morning meetings, we will continue to learn more about the Thriver trait of self-control. Students will have the opportunity to discuss and practice the difference between reacting to a situation without thinking, and responding thoughtfully using the steps for self-control.
Reacting means acting quickly without giving much thought to your actions. This happens when we forget to THINK before we act. Reacting can sometimes lead you to make a choice that doesn’t help you or others to feel good. Some examples include yelling or hitting someone.
Responding thoughtfully to situations means staying calm and thinking before you act. Responding leads you to make a choice that does help you and others feel good. Some examples of responding thoughtfully include calmly expressing your feelings to someone or counting to ten before you act or speak.
You are our children’s best teachers, so model responding thoughtfully to frustrating situations, and have discussions with your kids when you or another family member has reacted without thinking instead of responding thoughtfully.
You can lead conversations with statements or questions like, “That was a strong reaction. How could you respond thoughtfully next time?”, or “How do you think your reaction made the other person feel?” “Let’s brainstorm together how we can respond thoughtfully to the situation…”
It’s also important to remember that we all react without thinking from time to time and we can use these reactions as opportunities to pause and try again next time.
