From the Superintendent
West Irondequoit CSD update from Aaron Johnson
November 1, 2021
Dear Families,
As a follow-up to Friday’s news about Mr. Steinberg, we wanted to check in and share with you what is happening in our schools and more details about an opportunity for a community conversation.
Today, our staff began with an age-appropriate acknowledgement with students of recent events in the news. Staff members did not get into details. They referred any students in need of more timely support to our Pupil Services team. If students had even more wonderings, we asked that they talk with you – their families. We respect that some families may wish to hold these conversations together at home. To offer continued support with these conversations, please read the tips about talking to older and younger children about events in the news. As always, please contact your child's building principal for help, as needed.
At 7 PM this Wednesday, Nov. 3, we will hold a town hall discussion via Zoom video. For this conversation, key members of our leadership team will join me and representatives from the Bivona Child Advocacy Center. We will answer questions and share advice regarding the recent news. The link to join this Zoom will be emailed to families Wednesday morning. Note: Only panelists will be on camera; guests with questions will have their microphones turned on.
Navigating crises like this takes a team and often special training. Learning of this news was shocking and unexpected. I am grateful for our countywide Trauma, Illness, and Grief (TIG) structure and knowledgeable colleagues such as Director of Student Services, Dr. Susan Flood, Supervisor of Special Education, Mrs. Karyn Ryan, Supervisor of Counseling, Student Equity and Wellness, Mr. Joseph Jackson, and our building administrators for their leadership. Thanks to their coordination and help from Bivona, we quickly mobilized support and communication to ensure our students and you had this information. I am grateful for our community's ongoing commitment to our children's academic, social, emotional and mental health.
Sincerely,
Aaron R. Johnson, Ed. D
