MLK COMMEMORATIVE DAY JACKSONVILLE
Aug 24 to commemorate 50th Anniversary of March on DC
You are Cordially Invited to Attend
CLARIFICATION: This is a commemorative event that will not be similar to the picket protest event in the tradition of Moral Mondays in Raleigh. The program includes speakers, performers and live music and will be celebratory. The public is encouraged to bring their picnic basket dinner.
Mayor Sammy Phillips has issued a Proclamation on the event. It is non-partisan and open to the public. The thrust is to honor Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy of an ever-continuous call for freedom, justice and equality. As the group marches from the courthouse to the park, there will no doubt be groups whose life work is a reflection that honors that legacy with their ongoing advocacy of Dr. King's dream. They will be walking behind the banners of their group carrying signs, for example churches, NAACP. Individuals may also participate in the march.
At the park there will be informational tables with literature educating the public on the current issues. One of the handouts will be on future Jacksonville Moral Mondays.
