May 2023
From the Principal
Dear Spring Hill Families,
The 2022-2023 school year is winding to a close, but it's certainly not over yet! I encourage parents to check grades on parent connect and help our students persevere and finish strong. We've experienced a year of challenges but are ending with what feels like a "typical" year. We are a school community that builds on positive relationships with our students and families. This contributes greatly to student success at school.
With spring comes renewed energy, and family involvement is critical for a safe end-of-year. Your presence at the bus stops is particularly important. If there is an issue you notice at the bus stop, please do not hesitate to contact the front office. Please watch for any signs of vandalism or harassment. Even when events happen outside of the school day, students who violate rules, hurt people or property will be disciplined. We must all work together to keep our community safe.
RETURNING STUDENTS CAN NOW REGISTER ONLINE
Why is this important?
- The number of teachers that are allocated to Spring Hill is directly impacted by student enrollment.
- You can register at the Front Office or online
- Registering your child allows them to be placed on a class list. Combining online and August registration helps us accurately determine how many students will be at Spring Hill.
Alaska state law requires all schoolchildren to be immunized in order to attend school. ASD follows the state’s strict requirement of “No Shots, No School” and requires proof of immunization at enrollment. By law, a student is not allowed to attend classes unless they are compliant with immunization requirements. The exceptions to this are a valid Alaska state medical or religious exemption (must be notarized) or a 30 day waiver for those who are in the Child in Transition or active duty military dependents who have just been relocated to Anchorage. Military and Homeless waivers are required by federal law.
Our Back-To-School Social will be Tuesday, August 15, 4:30-6:00PM. The annual back to school event will include staff introductions and the posting of class lists.
- Grades 1st-6th will begin on August 17
- Pre-K and kindergarten will begin on August 24
Lastly, we wish all our outgoing 6th-grade families the best of luck! Have a safe and wonderful summer vacation. We hope to see everyone else in the fall. Thank you for making the 22-23 school year at Spring Hill Elementary a success!

In addition, all teachers and school faculty can get a *FREE 12oz drink of choice at any Kaladi Brothers Cafe on May 10th – it’s our way of saying thanks!
Nurse Notes
With the school year coming to a close I have a few reminders...
The last day of school will be Tues, May 23rd. All student medications need to be picked up by a parent or guardian before 3:45pm on that day. The Anchorage School District requires us to dispose of any medications that are left in the building after the last day of school. This includes Epi-Pens, inhalers, daily pills, as well as any medications that may have been brought to me for use as needed. We are not allowed to give any medications to students to carry home themselves.
If your child is due for any immunizations before the start of the coming school year, you will receive a phone call and letter from me before school is out. If this is the case, I strongly encourage you to schedule an appointment and take care of this as soon as possible. Pediatric offices tend to be very busy and scheduled out in August before school starts.
If you become aware of any changes to your child's medical information over the summer, please do not forget to indicate that on the health portion when you register your student for next year and notify me when school starts back up in August. Complete and up to date information is so crucial to serve your student well and keep them as safe as possible here at school. Also keep the school in mind if your address or contact info changes over the summer.
If your child is going to need special treatments next year, please remember that I will need the proper paperwork in place in August.
Bicycle Helmets
Does your child have a bicycle helmet? If not, one will be provided free of charge while supplies last at your local Fire Department. Please click the link below for additional information.
Anchorage requires all children under the age of 16 to wear a helmet when biking to protect those developing minds!

Here's the text in the link:
April 20, 2023 ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Free bicycle helmets for children and teenagers are now available at Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) stations.
This safety program is a collaboration between Safe Kids Alaska, AFD, and the International Association of Firefighters Local 1264, with generous funding provided by the Children's Miracle Network.
To receive a helmet:
- Kids/teens must be present so the helmet can be fitted and adjusted; and
- Supplies are limited to stock on hand.
Although any child can receive a free helmet, this program is intended for those who might not otherwise be able to obtain a bike helmet.

Calling ALL Library Books!
Please help your student(s) look for their library books and get them returned to our library. Those books tend to sprout legs and end up in the weirdest spots! Some great places to search are under the bed, behind the sofa, in the car, closets, and on their bookshelves.
If a book is lost or damaged, it is ASD’s policy to either pay or replace the book. $10 for a paperback book, $20 for a hardcover book. If you need to pay for a lost/damaged book, please contact me or your student's teacher OR you may go to Title Wave on Northern Lights and purchase a replacement book.
Please feel free to email me at henrie_marlena@asdk12.org if you have questions.
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Henrie
