Wednesday Word
October 20th, 2021
From the Principal
We are looking forward to seeing all our families over the course of the next two days for Parent/Teacher Conferences. Just a reminder there is no school on Thursday, Friday and Monday.
I also want to send a huge shout out to parent, Laura Eland, for her work on our landscaping out front. It is looking amazing!
Just a reminder we will host a fall festival next Friday, October 29th. Activities will be hosted outside with an inclement weather day scheduled for Monday, November 1st. Room parents will be reaching out with a sign up genius requesting help with volunteering or sending in items for games/snacks. Students may wear costumes to school and they will wear them all day, we will not do any changing at school. Please make sure students wear costumes that can be worn all day and that are respectful and meet the expectations below.
- Cultures are not costumes-Please read and share the information with your child in the handout below around showing empathy and avoiding cultural appropriations at Fall Festival.
- Costumes associated with violence will not be allowed, specifically no weapon props
- No blood and gore
- Students must be able to see where they are walking, please consider this when choosing a costume
- If a student dresses in a costume that violates any of the criteria listed above they may be asked to remove the costume
If you do not want your child to participate in any of the Fall Festival activities just email me at melissa.blevins@usd497.org and we will have alternate activities for them.
As always it is an honor to serve as the Principal of Sunflower Elementary.

Parking Lot Help
In order for our staff to have a place to park when they arrive in the morning we are asking that families do not park in the parking lot prior to 8:15am. We have around 60 staff who need to be able to park daily and their start time is 8:15. Since we do not open our doors until 8:30 we would ask that you wait until 8:30 and/or use the car line for drop off.
We appreciate your attention to this matter.

Wednesday, October 27th = Sunflower Scholars mix up our lives with a variety of healthy choices such as getting sleep, learning, exercising, & eating healthy foods. Wear mismatched attire!
Thursday, October 28th = Sunflower Scholars show kindness to one another through our choice of words and actions. Bring a stuffed animal/toy to school!
Friday, October 29th = Sunflower Scholars say "BOO" to Unhealthy Choices! (no official spirit day as we are celebrating Fall Festival)
Listening, Learning and Supporting
From Sunflower PTO:
Thank you to all the Sunflower families who came out for the Eat and Earn at Taco Johns and supported our 5th grade class! They received $450 toward their fundraising goal. Stay tuned for a second Eat and Earn in November!
We would also like to thank everyone who donated money to PTO on our $1 PJ Day. We raised just over $300!
Fall Parties
Be on the lookout for information regarding this years Fall Parties. Parent Liaisons are sending out a SignUp genius for treats, drinks, and other items that are needed for each class.
Spring Fun Run!!
