BMHS Weekly Update

Important Health Information from Southwest General Health Center
From the BMHS Clinic: February is Heart Health Month
February is American Heart Month. Heart disease in children is either congenital, as in heart defects, or acquired, as in Kawasakis, rheumatic fever or coronary artery disease. Currently heart disease is occurring younger and younger. High cholesterol can and is happening in children. Some reasons are due to poor diet, lack of activity and childhood obesity.
Here are some ways to help a child develop health heart habits:
1. Positive adult role models
2. More family activities
3. Limits on sedentary activities like TV watching, internet surfing and video game.
4. Limits on snacks and choosing healthy snacks
5. Encourage your child’s physical activity by joining a sports team, dance, outdoor playtime or regular exercise. The “What moves U Campaign” was formed to encourage middle school student to get more physical activity through school activation kits, curriculum plans and websites initiated by the American Heart Association and the National Football League.
6. Do not use food like ice cream and cookies as a reward.
7. Avoid fast food.
