Shepard News & Notes

October 14, 2016

Hello Shepard Families!

Before you know it, Thanksgiving Break will be here! Please remember to sign up for Portfolio Showcase on November 21 or 22; sign up information is located below!

Warm Regards,

1st/FINAL Posting - Traffic Reminder

During pick up, please be kind to our neighbors. Do not park in front of driveways and refrain from making 3-point turns in the street or in our neighbors driveways to head north on Grove. Not only do our neighbors frequently complain about their driveways being used for this purpose, this presents a safety risk to our students.

1st/FINAL Posting - Strategic Planning Survey Reminder

The District's strategic planning process is underway. Earlier this week, you should have received an email from the District's research partner, The ECRA Group, who developed the surveys based on information they heard during a series of focus groups they held with stakeholders in September. We want every parent to participate! Please check your email inbox for an email from ECRA ( and take a few minutes to give your input. The survey closes on October 23.

2nd Posting - Shepard Student Portfolio Showcase

Purpose: The purpose of Shepard’s Portfolio Night is for students to report to their

parent/guardian on their academic progress.

Context: Portfolio Night is one of many opportunities for parents/guardians to receive

information about the curriculum and their child’s progress. Portfolio Night compliments Open House--an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and hear about the curriculum--and is intended to provide additional progress reporting.

It is important to note that Portfolio Night is not meant to be a traditional parent-teacher conference. Due to scheduling constraints, it is not possible to offer individual conferences with each teacher in a format similar to elementary school. However, should you desire to meet with a teacher or team of teachers individually, please reach out to them directly. Teachers are very happy to conference with parents/guardians by phone or in person throughout the year.

Structure: In advance of portfolio night, students will work with their teachers to develop a

comprehensive portfolio that represents the very best of their coursework. With

the assistance of teachers, students will prepare a presentation of their work for parents/guardians.

Students and parents will select a time (see below) to meet at Shepard Middle School to review the portfolio. At the meeting, students and parents will be assigned to a classroom where the student’s Core teachers will be stationed. While the student will manage his/her presentation, Core teachers will be available should parents have specific questions best addressed by them. In addition, Encore staff will be available in designated locations to address any questions parents may have.

2nd/FINAL Posting - Having Food Delivered to Shepard

We kindly request that you refrain from having food (Jimmy John's, Il Forno, Potbelly, etc.) delivered during the school day. Deliveries become a disruption to the normal operation of the school office. Should your child forget his/her lunch and you are unable to bring one to school, please call the main office and we will work with you to ensure your child gets a lunch.

8th Posting - Yearbook Ordering

This year, yearbook orders are being processed directly through our supplier, Walsworth. Just navigate to, enter Alan B. Shepard, and follow the onscreen prompts. Simple!
