News, Highlights and Updates from AVID in RISD
12 RISD DELL SCHOLARS!
IT TAKES MORE THAN FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO REACH COLLEGE GRADUATION.
That’s why the Dell Scholars program was designed to provide a support system for the challenges many students face while pursuing a degree. Even so, we recognize that college costs can be a significant burden for many students and their families. Nationally, 500 Dell Scholars are selected each year to receive a $20,000 scholarship plus lots of non-monetary supports and 12 of those recipients are from Richardson ISD! Please join me in celebrating the following Dell Scholarship recipients:

Northlake Elementary is our first RISD Elementary AVID Showcase Campus!
Northlake hosted our very first RISD elementary AVID Showcase to districts all across the metroplex. 7 years ago, Northlake decided that their campus would implement AVID systems schoolwide, Kinder through 6. Every teacher attended Dallas Summer Institute. A site team was formed and schoolwide initiatives were set into place. Little by little the educators broke down barriers for their scholars, created opportunities to explore colleges and careers, and set a goal oriented mindset amongst their teachers and scholars. Because of these actions, Northlake is now a school where educators can come and spend time growing their own craft as a Schoolwide AVID Showcase Campus.
"AVID allows us to be a better version of us!"
A Northlake student showed Student Agency and shared her story about coming from a campus without AVID to a campus with the systems of AVID in place. She shared how much her teachers believe and expect her to be successful in both academic and non academic ways.
Thank you, Northlake Elementary for being vulnerable, opening your doors, and growing all children, all teachers, all leaders, every single day!
Berkner showcases WICOR in Action
Berkner High School is AVID for all 9th and 10th graders, hosts an all boys AVID elective and provides a zero hour AVID class so that all students have access to the college and career readiness system that only AVID can provide. The AVID scholars and Berkner cheerleaders all shined so brightly as they showcased their school pride, how they engage in their learning through WICOR strategies, and utilize their organizational system and tutorials to be able to succeed and juggle the many classes, clubs, and home expectations that get thrown at them on a daily basis.
Berkner AVID seniors have over 200 college acceptances and have collected over 4 million dollars in scholarships which surpassed their 3 million goal that they set at the beginning of the year. Each senior has a plan and the skill sets to be independent after graduation. Congratulations Class of 2023 and Berkner AVID for being a campus where other districts can come and learn from the great things you are doing everyday, for all students!
Congratulations to our AVID Teacher and Coach of our LHHS State Basketball Team
TRE STEWART
Tre pours his heart and soul into teaching his AVID students and coaching his players. What an amazing accomplishment to a much deserving team of students and coaches!
Berkner AVID Scholars Become Forensic Scientists
What does it take to be a forensic scientist?
Students in the AVID elective are utilizing the STEM Center to hone their skills in critical thinking, observation, research and making connections to discover which university their student went to.
So where did our missing “college student” go?
Shout out to Mrs. Snodgrass for using Quick Writes in her RLA Class at West!
Quick-writes involve asking a question, giving people a set amount of time for responding (usually between 1-5 minutes), and either hearing or reading the responses. The quick-write can be modified endlessly, depending on circumstances.
Ms. Watkins at West JH Uses the Collaborative Four Corners Strategy in RLA!
This collaborative strategy requires students to work and think together and can involve writing, thinking, collaboration and reading. It requires students to take a position on a particular subject and present an academic argument to others.
Richardson Mayor Summer Internship Program
Internships Rule!
Paving the way to a successful future for our youth, the Richardson Mayor’s Summer Internship Program immerses current high school juniors who attend Richardson ISD or live in Richardson into the professional workplace with internships at some of the area’s top businesses, nonprofits and government agencies.
There were 207 who applied for RMSIP and 148 who attended the mandatory RMSIP Workforce Skills Training this past Saturday and last night. Great news! - 36 of these students were AVID students. Last year we had 18 AVID students attend training so this is a 100% increase over last year!
Thank you High School Coordinators so much for your support and help promoting the program to students. We are excited about the group of students we have that are eligible so far and look forward to continuing the work to help them be as successful as possible and hopefully land an internship this summer!
