The Lance
March 16-27
The mission of Lakeshore Middle School is to promote collaboration between educators, students, and families to foster engaged learners and active and compassionate
members of their community.
Reflections from Mr. Swegles
Last night at 11:00 p.m., Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that in order to slow the spread of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan, she is ordering the closure of all K-12 school buildings, public, private, and boarding, to students starting Monday, March 16 until Sunday, April 5. (NOTE: There will be no change to Lakeshore’s scheduled Spring Break. Classes will resume for our students on April 13.)
School will be open on Friday, March 13.
We ask that students take home all instructional materials, such as textbooks, notebooks and supplemental materials on Friday, March 13th.
A more detailed communication was sent from Sup. Freeman late last night and should be in your email inbox. You may also find a link on our district homepage.
Lakeshore Middle School would like to send a special THANK YOU to our local
Whirlpool Corporation for their generous donation. A school is only as strong as its
community and with Whirlpool’s support, we were able to replace our school’s two
broken ice machines. Both items are greatly appreciated and will allow us to support
the ongoing health and well-being of Lakeshore Middle School students and staff. We
are beyond grateful!! Thank you again, Whirlpool, for your generosity and support.

Chromebooks Expectations
This is a great time to remind students and families of what are Chromebook expectations are here at school.
Everything done on the Chromebook must be school appropriate.
Everything your student does on the Chromebook is monitored. When something is flagged as unsafe or inappropriate by our filtering system an email is sent to school administration. Information is then shared with parents. If child safety is a concern a situation may be shared with our school counselor, Mrs. Weaver.
No outside devices are to be used in place of Chromebook
Fully charged at night and brought back the next day
If there technical difficulties with a student's Chromebook, the process is to take it to the library, fill out a technical repair sheet, and get a loner. Loners are not provided, however, for Chromebooks that have not been charged.
Students are still responsible for the work that is expected to done if they do not come prepared with their Chromebook.
March is Reading Month with United Way
The United Way will be placing a book collection box near the front lobby. If you have any gently used books that you would like to donate, please feel free to place them there during the month of March!
Did you know that 24% of adults in America report to not having read a book in the last 12 months? Book donations don't all have to be children's books as adults need quality reading material available to them.

Information Worth Sharing
I respect the position you are in as parents of middle schoolers. Our generation(s) did not have to navigate the world of social media as teens. The biggest tech challenge in my own home is not having my 7 and 4-year-old watch videos of kids playing with toys instead of actually, well...playing with their own toys.
Monitoring technology/cell phone usage is a daunting task, but I can't express how important it is.
