Happenings
Academic and (and some extra-curricular) awards will be presented during the 5th Grade Awards ceremony next Tuesday, May 24th. If your child will be receiving an award, he or she received a letter. Please let me know if you have any questions about the awards or the event.
Before the ceremony, the 5th graders will parade around the school and end in the cafeteria. Those of you attending the parade and ceremony will want to arrive at school early to reserve a seat in the cafeteria. The parade begins at 8:20 sharp. The ceremony normally lasts about 45 minutes.
Immediately following the awards ceremony, all parents and families of our Musing Minds classroom are welcome to join us for our Poetry Slam. Students will share an original poem or two. Guests are invited to share a favorite poem as well. Before we begin the Poetry Slam, we will present our 5th Grade Superlative awards. All students in our class will receive an award. The exact time might vary, but plan on 9:30-10:30.
Tuesday is indeed a busy day, as the 5th Grade Celebration occurs later that evening at Grace Church. The Celebration is a memorable evening for students and parents alike. We hope you all plan attend. Thank you to all who have already donated to help cover the costs of the event.
If you are willing and able to volunteer for the 5th Grade Picnic on the last day of school, 10:30-12:00, we'd love to have you. We need adults to pass out pizza and to help with the set-up and take-down. Come and help us to make our 5th graders' last day a great one! Again, contact me or Laura Morgan.
Today your child brought home a manila file folder filled with reading and writing work. (This doesn't apply to Ms. Layson's students.) Be sure to read through the papers. It is clear much our writers have grown this the year.
We have grown as readers too. Many of our students have already met or surpassed their reading goals by completing their Reading Workshop Genre Requirements. Our collective goal is 530 books read this year. We are at 501! If every student in the class finishes a book this weekend, we will surely reach our goal by Wednesday. If that's the case, it has been decided that we'll celebrate with a pool party sometime this summer. Stay tuned. And kids.....crack open your books!
Speaking of reading, today your child registered for the Gwinnett County Public Library Summer Reading Program. An informational flyer is in the Friday Folder. Last week we sent home the Five Forks rising 6th grade summer reading list and assignment. See the Five Forks media center for more information. Crews has summer reading posted as well.
No personal devices are permitted the last three days of school. Cells phones that are used for after-school communication are the only exception. Students' cell phones must remain in their bookbags. Thank you for honoring the Gwin Oaks policy.
