On Thursday, May 12th, to honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month,
Author Jennifer Shaw will visit TGE to discuss her book - Dumplings Mean Family!

The book description is as follows:

“When Ethan and his siblings are adopted from China to the United States, everything seems so strange and different. Their new American family doesn't even know how to make Chinese food! The children are worried. Will they ever get to eat their favorite meals again? For Ethan's family, embracing two cultures means learning to fold and pinch their way to dumplings that taste like home.”

Jennifer Shaw: will share some of her family's story and the writing process, and then share pictures of their time in China and talk about what it would be like to live there (which the kids always really love - typical housing, grocery shopping, how they write and what school is like, etc, plus some of the famous cultural landmarks). Then she will teach them how to say a few things in Chinese and take questions if there is time.

The sessions will take place in the gym and the times for the visit will be on Thursday, May 12th:

  • 10:30-11:30am K-am, 3rd and 4th
  • 1:30-2:30pm K-pm, 1st and 2nd

Attached is the order form for the book, Dumplings Mean Family:

Payment is due with orders, checks made payable to TGE PTSO or cash - exact change only will be accepted. If you would like to pay by credit card online, tax will be collected with the order. Jennifer Shaw will bring the signed copies when she arrives for the visit, she offers a 25% discount for schools, offering the book at $15.00 (not the MSRP $19.95) on presales.

Order forms with payment are due on Wednesday, May 4th, this will allow us to have the signed copies here for distribution on Thursday, May 12th when Jennifer Shaw visits TGE.

I hope you enjoy this unique opportunity to learn about a multi-cultural family as we honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

Thank you,

If an emergency arises, please call the office before 3pm to change your child's dismissal procedure. We cannot ensure your child will get the message after this time, as this is when classroom folders with messages are delivered. Thanks!

Safety First

Did you know that we have monthly safety drills that include fire and tornado drills, medical evacuation and lockdown procedures? In addition, our Head Custodian conducts periodic perimeter checks throughout the day. As a staff we frequently discuss current safety practices and make adjustments if necessary. Substitute teachers are provided with emergency information through sub plans and those plans are checked frequently. The district purchased 2 AED devices and has partnered with Fairfield Medical Center to train all of our 4th graders and most staff on hands only CPR. All doors are kept locked at all times, It is extremely important to us that we provide a safe environment while you share your child with us.

Slow Down

Our entire staff is committed to providing a safe environment for your children. You can help! Our staff asks that you SLOW DOWN when approaching Toll Gate Elementary school grounds. We ask that when you enter school grounds, please don't enter through the DO NOT ENTER SIGNS and be watchful especially during morning drop off and afternoon pickup. Remember that our morning bell rings at 9:05am with the tardy bell ringing at 9:15am. Allow your child sufficient time to get to class by 9:15am. Students dismiss at 3:50pm. Please be watchful at crosswalks, especially in the parking lot. Our Toll Gate Elementary staff asks for your respect, your responsibility, and your cooperation in making out school a safe place for all of our children.
