EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
SUMMER NEWSLETTER
I would like to begin this newsletter by congratulating our all-girls robotics team students and coach Kaya for winning third place in the category of core values at the 2017 First Lego League International Open Championship in UK. What an amazing achievement!
I am also pleased to inform you that Alpharetta Technology Commission will award our girls with "Trailblazers in STEAM” award during their annual dinner this September. Very proud of these girls as they chart the course for many girls in engineering fields.
This is the 7th national/international academic competition our Fulton Science Academy students represented the State of Georgia in 2017. Very proud of our students and teachers. Way to go!
Special thanks to Verizon and Tornado Alert companies for their support of our academic teams.
NEW ADDITIONS TO FSA FACULTY AND ADMIN TEAM
I am pleased to inform you that just like our student numbers, our faculty and administrative team members are growing as well. This year, we have 68 faculty members at our school. Some of these positions are new and will play a great role in our continuous efforts to provide the best education possible for our precious students. We have announced our new curriculum coordinator Mrs. Ivarie earlier this year. We are also adding an additional counselor who will mainly work on college counseling issues and an additional front office clerk to our school. We also have a new administrative member Mrs. Michelle Todd joining us this July. Mrs. Todd has a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Digital Learning and currently works on her specialist degree. Mrs. Todd will mainly work on our gifted program and school discipline issues. Mrs. Todd's last role was the District Director of Gifted Education overseeing the gifted and AP programs for all elementary, middle and high schools within her district. We look forward to another wonderful year at FSA with our wonderful students, parents and faculty!
EXCITING NEWS ABOUT OUR NEW CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
The last five years our students enjoyed a rigorous curriculum based on the national standards at our school. As we have advanced and gifted students, the national education standards were only a base for us and we always enriched our curriculum to better meet the needs of our gifted students. This year, we are taking it to a whole new level by making several improvements in our curriculum development process. We created a much needed regular professional learning and collaboration time for our teachers during their daily schedule beside their two hours of planning times. We have also acquired an amazing online curriculum mapping and development tool for our faculty to collaborate together on our curriculum and specifically on STEAM units. Through this tool we also gained access to the resources developed by other schools, universities, foundations, and companies. As Fulton Science Academy plans to open a few other branches in the future, these efforts today will allow us to reach our goals tomorrow in a much smoother and successful way! Thank you for being part of our journey!
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES!
This Independence Day, take a step back and cherish your life and the country you live in while appreciating the sacrifices people made to give us independence today. Happy 4th of July to everyone!
This issue of our summer newsletter is filled with lots of important details to help get our academic year off to a great start. We hope you will read through this newsletter carefully and that you find the information to be helpful.
With Warmest Regards,
Principal Sener
3rd place in "Core Values" category at the 2017 First Lego League International Open Championship in Bath, UK.
On June 19th five members of FSA’s all-female robotics team, CTR-ALT-DELETE, embarked on a weeklong journey to Bath, England to compete in the First Lego League International Championship. The all-girls team is the first in Georgia to compete in an international robotics championship, making their participation doubly historic!
The girls shipped their project—an eco-friendly mosquito trap, originally designed and 3D printed at the school, and a solar-powered bat house assembled with recycled materials—across the Atlantic to compete against over 90 other teams from all over the world. Their strong bond and enthusiasm for robotics wowed the judges, and they took home 3rd place in Teamwork, a tremendous honor.
In addition to the competition, the girls had the opportunity to dorm at the University of Bath, tour ancient Roman ruins, complete a scavenger hunt in the historic city, and meet students from across the globe. Their final night in London was punctuated with a live performance at the Lyric Theatre. All in all, it was the trip of a lifetime. Way to go, CTR-ALT-DELETE!
We would like to thank all of our sponsor for supporting our students during this journey. Special thanks to Verizon and Tornado Alert companies for their support.
Principal Sener IS AWARDED WITH 2017 GLOBAL DESTINATION IMAGINATION SPIRIT OF DI VOLUNTEER AWARD
This award honors those who demonstrate outstanding and extraordinary levels of spirit, those whose sacrifices are not for themselves but for others.
This year’s recipients include twelve volunteers from all over the nation. There were two recipients from our wonderful state of Georgia. The other recipient was Annette Rogers, one of the Directors of Destination Imagination Georgia. Congratulations to Mrs. Rogers as well. Thank you both for all you do for our students.
STUDENTS OF THE YEAR - AN OPPORTUNITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Our college counseling department would like to introduce an opportunity for our high school students to develop their leadership skills, engage in the community, andcompete for a college scholarship.
The application can be found at www.lls.org/ga/soy/apply
WHAT: Students of the Year is a seven-week fundraising competition for high school students to win scholarships, gain leadership skills, community service hours, and resume building. This youth initiative is a leadership development and philanthropy program that allows students to stand out among their peers when engaging with colleges and/or future employers, all while joining in the fight against cancer. Nominated students are selected as candidates via the LLS Leadership Committee. Selection is based upon a questionnaire and essay submitted by each interested student. At the Grand Finale Gala, the candidate or team who raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named Students of the Year Winner(s). Proceeds benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Georgia Chapter to fund a cure for blood cancers.
WHO: Candidates are motivated local area high school students enrolled in private or public schools who are enthusiastic about volunteerism, philanthropy, community outreach, and leadership! Students may compete as an individual or as a team of two or three students.
WHEN:
We are accepting applications and candidates now! Application can be found at www.lls.org/ga/soy/apply
Campaign Kickoff – Friday, January 12, 2018
Grand Finale Gala – Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Georgia Aquarium
WHY: To join the fight against cancer and improve the quality of life for our patients and their families. Leukemia is the number one cancer killer of children under the age of 20; therefore kids are helping kids battling these devastating cancers. Candidates will raise money in honor of a patient hero who is currently battling or is in remission from a blood cancer.
This campaign not only offers visibility in the community and local media but also demonstrates candidates’ excellence in leadership and community engagement for college applications and professional resumes. Candidates are also eligible for scholarship awards. The Students of the Year Winner(s) will receive a $2,500 scholarshiptoward the college or university of his/her choice. The Students of the Year Runner-Up(s) will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the Citizenship Award winners will receive a $500 scholarship.
HOW: Students rally their communities, schools, and families to support their fundraising efforts. Candidates will form and lead a team to help with fundraising, planning, and communications of the campaign. Along with their own websites, students receive guidance and mentoring from experienced LLS staff to develop and execute an action plan to reach their personal fundraising goal. LLS will provide fundraising materials and ample support throughout the campaign. Suggested fundraising methods include: a letter writing/email campaign, personal asks, and social networking, however each candidate and their campaign team will brainstorm with LLS staff to determine a plan for success that could include sponsorships, table sales, program ad sales, and events to make a real impact in the fight against blood cancer.
NEW STUDENTS BAND & ORCHESTRA PROGRAM INSTRUMENT SELECTION - JULY 29 FROM 10AM TO 2PM
We hope that you continue to have a great summer holiday.
At FSA, all students take either band or orchestra starting at 5th grade. If you need help with selecting your instrument for either band or orchestra program, please join us on Saturday, July 29th between 10am and 2pm.
We would like to clarify a few more things for you about our music program.
* If you have already made your selection of either band or orchestra and if you already know your instrument, then you do not need to come.
* If you need help with instrument selection but you cannot come on July 29th, then please work with Ken Stanton or any other music company directly. On the Ken Stanton website there is a specific link for Fulton Science Academy. They will be able to help you with instrument selection. http://www.kenstanton.net/band-orchestra-rentals/
* If your child is already playing another instrument which is not listed in our e-mail below and you do not want your child to change the instrument, that won't be a problem. We will accommodate you in our classes. We will not require students to begin a second instrument unless they are willing to. Playing one instrument is good enough for our student's college application.
* Band and Orchestra Classes will offered as follows:
- One Hour Band or Orchestra Class During the Week as part of Specials of Art, Computer, Music, Physical Education and PLTW.
- An Optional Zero Period Band and Orchestra During the Week between 7:25am and 8:05am. Zero period will begin after labor day.
* We will also offer band, orchestra, chorus and some other music clubs as after school clubs for those interested. The detailed club schedule will be shared during orientation day on August 4th.
* Private music classes will still be available at our school. Detailed information about private music classes will be shared soon.
If you have any other questions, please contact Dr. Hawk at ehawk@fultonscienceacademy.org
