THE SCHOOL BELL
Williston Schools / April 11, 2018
A Message from the Administration
Happy Spring
by John Terko, Allen Brook School Principal
On Sunday, April 8 I was watching the Masters Golf Tournament. The biggest golf tournament on the PGA tour. I look outside and much to my chagrin, it’s snowing!!! Now, I know I live in Vermont but this is a little over the top. As an avid golfer, this just puts my season a few more weeks behind schedule. You just never know around here what the weather will bring but I do know that eventually we will be enjoying sunshine and warmer temperatures. Think warm everyone.
It’s that time of year again for thinking about next year and placement of students moving from K to 1st, 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th grade. We have sent notices out in the Bell and the input forms can be downloaded from a link in the bell or on our website. I encourage you to fill these out to the best of your ability as we use this information to help us place your child for the upcoming year. We take teacher input as well and spend days trying to make the right connection of student and teacher. So, don’t hesitate, get those forms filled out and turned in.
Last Friday, Jump Rope for Heart was taking place in the ABS gym. This involves students in grades 1-4. It is always a wonderful event and supports an outstanding cause. To add a little drama, Lyn Porter, our Phys. Ed teacher challenged the students to raise $20,000. If they could raise that, she was to be slimed in front of the whole school. Well, they made it and Justine Benoit (Harmony teacher) was the lucky winner to slime Miss Porter. Students cheered her on as she started slowly and then dumped the whole bucket all over Ms. Porter. I’m sure it’s on Facebook so be sure to check out the video.
Last Friday, I attended a dinner in recognition of Sharon Davison, Kindergarten teacher here at ABS. Sharon was nominated for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. This is the highest recognition that a K-12 mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. The awards were established in 1983, and are administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation. The review committee selects two teachers from each state to be honored as an award winner. We are all proud of the work that Sharon has done and will hear more from the institution in the months ahead.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month
Underage drinking risks immediate consequences, including impaired driving, alcohol poisoning, and increased risk of sexual assault, but studies also reveal that 90% percent of long-term addictions start in the teen years. Connecting Youth encourages you to educate yourself and your loved ones about the importance of early education on alcoholism and addiction.
In Vermont, 30% of high school students reported drinking alcohol in the past 30 days, according to the 2015 Vermont Youth Risk Behavior Survey. To spread the word and prevent alcohol abuse among youth in Vermont, Connecting Youth partners with ParentUp (http://parentupvt.org), an initiative of the Vermont Department of Health.
Drugs and alcohol are not easy topics to bring up, especially with children and teens who may often seem like they’re not listening. But the truth is that the #1 reason kids give for not drinking is that they don’t want to disappoint their parents. Children do care deeply about their parents’ opinions—even if they don’t show it directly.
Parents can help prevent alcohol and other drug use with the following strategies:
- Set the foundation by helping your child develop key skills, experiences, relationships, and behaviors
- Talk about alcohol, drugs, and mental health issues
- Monitor your teen
- Spread the word and make connections with other parents
- Know the warning signs
If you think your teen is drinking or using drugs, find information and help at:
Williston March Madness
Volunteers are the true heroes who give their time, talents and energy to help others. And the Williston March Madness volleyball team had a wonderful experience to learn from. and play with, a very talented group of volunteers.
With this core support, the students learned the fundamental skills and drills to compete against other middle schools in a very short month! From practices to matches - all involved were supportive, encouraging and cheering for the team!
Many thanks to Coach Jessica Fay for helping with practices and drills. Thank you to CVU Volleyball players and alumni: Olivia, Lily, Shea, Julia, Reilly, Ashley, Natalie, Lauren, Andrea, Cooper, Nick, Alex, Jacob and Jeff for your help at practices, demonstrating skills, officiating and cheering - you all were great role models! Special thanks to CVU coach Robyn Davis for running the basic skills workshop to kick off the season and CVU coach Matt Spitznagle for helping with the end of season Saturday Jamboree. Final thanks to CVU coach Jeff Boliba for his support at many practices and games. His coaching and positive energy brought the game together for the team.
I look forward to seeing you all on the courts in the future! With gratitude, Coach Cathy Keim
