From the Principal

Happy Super Bowl Weekend Benninghoven Knights!

We have had a ton of fun celebrating our Chiefs with our spirit days this week. Students and staff really shared their creativity and passion for our hometown team. In the upcoming weeks we will start to plan for next school year with enrollment for our 6th graders going to middle school, and our incoming PreK and Kindergarten Knights. You can find more information about the transition to middle school in this newsletter, and next week we will share more information about PreK/ Kindergarten enrollment.

Another key piece of information in this week's newsletter is an update on our remote learning day plans in the event of winter weather. We hope that having these details ahead of time will help your family to plan for a virtual learning day.

Have a wonderful weekend, stay warm, and enjoy cheering for our Chiefs!

-Dr. Gonser

7th Grade Enrollment

It's that time of year when we begin preparing our 6th grade students for the transition to Trailridge Middle School! Enrollment for 7th grade begins February 8th. Below you will find a link to a detailed document explaining the enrollment process. Please use the link to get started. The 6th grade team has also sent information directly to each 6th grade family. Additionally, here is a note from the 7th grade counselor:

Welcome future wildcat parents! Enrollment time is here and we have prepared several resources to guide you through the process. Your student’s teacher has a canvas module that they can share with you and we’ve also sent them a one page guide to the enrollment process for parents. As you navigate this process, don’t hesitate to call Kristin Warner, next year’s 7th grade counselor, with any questions.

As you will note on the one page guide, we will be hosting a Q&A night on Feb. 10 from 6:30-7:30 PM when our administrators will be available to answer any questions you may have regarding enrollment or the middle school experience in general. There is a link to a google form so that you can submit questions ahead of time if you choose.

We’re excited to have your student at Trailridge next year!

Remote Snow Day Procedures

Several weeks ago, the Shawnee Mission School district shared with all families that there is a possibility we might have remote learning days due to bad weather this school year. In the past, these might have been snow days. In order to preserve the calendar as it is, we have added the remote learning day option this year.

In order to increase consistency and support families who might be juggling multiple schedules while learning at home, we have created some common Benninghoven expectations for remote snow days. Here is the schedule all grade levels will follow on these remote days:

8:10 Live Session: Attendance, Morning Meeting, Reading Instruction

9:00- 12:30 Special Education and Intervention Services as needed. If not applicable, Specials (Art, Music, Library PE) and other work can be completed during this time.

12:30- 1:00 Lunch

1:00 Live Session: Attendance, Math Instruction

2:00- 3:10 Special Education and Intervention Services as needed. If not applicable, Specials (Art, Music, Library PE) and other work can be completed during this time.

Please notice that attendance will be taken on remote days during the two live sessions. Attendance on remote days is required and typical attendance policies will apply. Also, regardless of which specials class (Art, Music, PE, Library) classes have that week, all students will use the specials choice board on a remote learning day.

Valentine's Day

Due to restrictions related to COVID-19, we will continue to follow the recommendation of the elementary reopening plan and not host class parties for Valentine's Day. Guests and food in the classrooms are not allowed due to safety precautions with Covid19. (This includes candy. Please do not send any edible Valentines to school.) We will incorporate fun learning activities related to Valentine's Day on the date we would have hosted classroom parties. Please see information from your child's teacher regarding any activities or celebrations related to Valentine's Day.
