Such Kind Words From A Grandparent

  • A copy of the blog Ms. Schroeder refers to "What Do I Expect From Elementary School? Not This!" has been placed in your mailboxes if you would like to read it.

Dear Ms. Hollenbeck,

I am the grandmother of Ella Schroeder, a 5th grader in Ms Ronson's homeroom. The attached article just appeared on my Facebook wall, shared by a family friend whose son is a 5th grader in a New York City school. Our friend felt that the article spoke directly to her frustrations about her son's elementary education. As I read the article, I felt compelled to send it to you because it is in so many ways the opposite of my granddaughter's experience. All the things the writer (and our friend who shared it) wishes for her children, Ella HAS received in her 6 years at Stoneleigh. I pick her up at school every day; she does homework at my house before going home with her Dad at the end of his work day. She DOES get in my car happy and enthusiastic most days; she DOES express excitement about her school experiences. She sits down to homework without complaint (there is almost always work to do; never an overwhelming amount; never a feeling of pressure). Her teachers, without exception, have been creative, affirming and dynamic. She has learned to express her thoughts and responses without anxiety; she has learned to write "persuasive letters" to make requests (and has translated this skill for regular use in her home life ); she has learned that teachers care and are approachable; she sees the classroom as a place to engage with others, work in an atmosphere of creativity and joy, and use the learning styles that best suit her-- all great tools for future use. A couple of examples among many experiences of active learning this year: Ms Ronson's use of persuasive letters to get permission to use "fidgets" in class; and Mr. Bosco's challenge in vocal music for each child to find music for "Joy to the World (because it has a full scale in it)," and learn to play it on their chosen musical instrument-- great interdepartmental cooperation!

I could say more-- but instead I refer you to the attached article, in which the writer (a teacher) is articulate in expressing the wishes that I believe Stoneleigh has already granted to Ella and, by extension, to our family. Thank you ALL!! (* Special thanks to Ella's team of teachers this year: Ms. Ronson, Ms. Fisher, Mr. Bosco, Ms. Link and Ms. Glewwe-- and the others she has loved in previous years).
