OCPL Weekly Update

March 24, 2015

Reminder! AFLAC presentations Monday, March 28, 2016, 8:30am and 3:30pm

On Monday, March 28, 2016, AFLAC will be coming to the Main Branch to make a presentation to all staff, including staff from Mahan and South. This meeting will be roughly 20-25 minutes in length allowing staff plenty of time to get to their work locations. The first presentation will take place at 8:30 am and a repeat presentation will be at 3:30 pm for all employees unable to attend the morning. Remember to let your supervisor know if you will be attending the 3:30 pm presentation in case you are a few minutes later for your shift. Also, please sign in at the meeting so that I know you have been to one of the presentations offered. If you are unable to attend the meeting, then the AFLAC representatives will make an appointment with you at a later date to make the presentation.

I want to let you know that the daily stats were correctly entered last month! Thanks to those of you who enter them and to those who record them on the sheets. We truly appreciate it.

I also want to remind you to look at the patron notes when people come in to pay their collections fines. Early each week I put a note in the accounts of the patrons that have a collection block. It looks similar to this: IF PATRON REDUCES FINES TO UNDER $35 BY NOON ON [date], PLEASE WAIVE THE $10 COLLECTIONS FEE. MM [date]. It is very important to waive this $10 because the patron shouldn’t have to pay it until we pay it to the collections agency. If they pay their fines before the specified date, then they do not owe the collections fee. Be sure to look in the notes field for all collections fines payments. We do call the collections patrons on Mondays or Tuesday so they may very well come in to pay the accounts. Thanks.

· Please remember to send the Bracketology votes to me in the run this Friday. The following rounds will be done via online voting.

· New Legacy podcast is up: Features the history of the Buckner Homemakers. This is a group that the library still partners with through the Oldham County Extension Service! https://soundcloud.com/oldhamlibrary/legacy-bucknerhomemakers

Next week is Audiobook week at the Library! We’re doing this as a pre-spring break promotion; what better time to check out audio books than right before you go on a road trip? Cheri’s been working on a lovely audiobook display for Main. In the lab, we’ll have audiobook listening stations (where you can sample some audiobooks before checking them out), and there will be an audiobook-themed episode of From the Stacks. If you have a favorite audiobook, please consider putting it on display, or writing a staff review for it.

This Monday is also the last of the first sessions of the Baby College. This has been a great outreach in the schools (and at South, who we had to invade this week due to the school library being closed for a book fair. Thanks for all the help, John, Elaine, & Vicki!). Baby College sessions at LaGrange Elementary will start in mid-April.

I’m starting with the BIG NEWS! I’m going to be a grandma! I’m a late arrival, but it looks like I’m finally joining the club! Allison & Chuck will be welcoming the new little one in late October.

Now on to library news…

I entered yet another Facebook contest last week and won a couple of Zootopia books from Penguin Random House. One is a sticker book that we’ll use as a giveaway. The other will be catalogued for our collection. Surely Powerball is next!

We’re in the early planning stages for the next Summer Reading Program display. Stay tuned for another fabulous and creative work of art! In the meantime, here is our Easter display. Thanks to Julie & Ellie for putting it together!

I’ve been weeding some old music that hasn’t circulated in order to make room for new CD’s.

Nothing else out of the ordinary this week – just the usual difficult patron encounters and matchmaking at the library!
