Mrs. Darnell 1st Grade
Dear Parents,
I hope everyone had a great weekend.
Spelling
The spelling words are from Spelling List 4: he, be, if, got, his, has, hot, ran, hand, fast, said*, and the*. The words with the asterisks are sight words and cannot be sounded out. There are two dictation sentences.
1. It ran so fast.
2. Dan sat in the sand.
Math
IIn math, we are continuing to learn and explore addition. We are also adding doubles, such as 2+2=4, and 5+5=10. There is a SUPER FUN YouTube song the kids enjoy chanting to help them learn their doubles facts- “Doubles! Doubles! I Can Add Doubles”. http://bit.ly/1FJiX2f A great website to practice math facts online at home is: http://oswego.org/ocsd-web/games/mathmagician/maths1.html
Social Studies
In social studies, we will be learning about the explorer Christopher Columbus. The students will be reviewing map skills such as cardinal directions, oceans and continents.
Backpacks
Each morning I call the students by tables to take their backpacks to their cubbies. At this time I remind them to take all their folders out and place them into two baskets. (There may be some confusion with the reading folders because I require a parent signature showing that your child has read their book before I place new books into their folders.)
I know that this procedure may be new for some students, but in 1st grade each child is responsible for taking items out of their backpacks in the morning, and organizing their papers into their take home folders in the afternoon. Most of my students have transitioned smoothly with this routine. I do have a few that are still working on this procedure. If you have noticed that your child has the same items in their backpack please let them know if you have signed their reading folder and Thursday folder and remind them to turn them in the next morning.
Thank you!
