Well it is that time again! We are leading into the final days of our 2022 school year. Today is the
last day of our teaching programmes with some fun activities and school prizegiving left on the
agenda before we close the doors for Christmas.
It has been another unusual year with sickness and precautionary related absence. It is our hope
that attendance at school will pick up again in the New Year. We require all students to be present in order to participate and achieve in learning. Please check the HERO App for the most recent posts on learning and achievement.
Our Year 7&8 students had a great ‘Experiencing Marine Reserves’ camp at Goat Island. This was well supported by the many parents who attended with them, and by others behind the scenes who helped with the organisation and preparation. Hopefully our students enjoyed the experience, had fun, and made memories!
We were proud of our students who competed in the swimming sports event that had been
previously postponed. We will be able to allocate the awards and certificates accordingly at the
prize giving.
Thank you to our students and families who support our Xmas Float themed ‘Elf on the shelf’ at the Christmas Parade last weekend. We even won a Prize!
I would like to conclude this final newsletter with some acknowledgements;
Firstly to Sandra Morgan, our cleaner who has worked for Okato College and then Coastal Taranaki School for the past 31 years. Sandra has decided it is time to retire and we are saddened as she is one of a kind. Her work ethic and collegiality is very rare. We know we will see her at school and around the village, so please acknowledge her and her many years of service when you see her next.
Mr Taylor will be returning in a part-time role next year, stepping down as the Team Leader of
Pouakai Team (Years 7-10) and from teaching his own Year 7&8 Class. He will be supporting
teachers with classroom release and will no doubt continue to support our Māra and environmental programmes in 2023. But we thank him for his contributions to teaching and learning, for his role as a board member for 6 years, and we acknowledge his change in roles moving forward.
Mrs Davidson has spent the year with us to complete her Reading Recovery Teacher training. It was a pleasure hosting her at CTS and she achieved exceptional results and progress with her learners. We are excited for her to be returning to Rahotu School to continue her great work.
We will also be seeing Mr Estrabillo off to NPBHS at the end of this year. He has taught our senior mathematics programmes this year, been a star at our school dress up events, taught Coding and led the school Chess team. Thank you for your time with us and we wish you well for your future.
I will confirm all the 2023 staffing with you once I have received the signed acceptance letters. But I can assure you that we have a great team of teachers and support staff at Coastal Taranaki School ready to return for the New Year.
On behalf of the team, I wish you all a safe and happy Christmas Break.
Ngā mihi

Tough Kids
Tough kids
On Friday Coastal Taranaki School Room 19 and 21 year 5 and 6 are going to tough kids in Hāwera. Tough kids are where kids go and do all these activities. It takes 1 hour to get from Ōkato to Hāwera. There were Piles of tyres.Zig zag,Going under tables,Scaffolding,
Obstacle course,Commando crawling-net,Cattle truck,
Spider web,Tunnels and Wooden fence jumps.
The first lap we had to go in a group of 4 or 5 and hold a hoop.We took turns holding the hoop sometimes the people would take it and give it back on the other side or we could do the course while we are holding the hoop and when your done your 1 lap you can do the rest of the course by yourself.
At the end of the course two people where doing cups of water almost all the people were tipping the cups of water on there head because they were hot.
We only spent 1 hour there but it was still hot.On the way back Jess fell asleep on me. When we got back it was lunch time..

Tough Kids
Besides the hour long, hot, boring, fidgety, smelly bus ride to Tough Kids in Hawera, it was awesome!
(Tough Kids not the bus ride.)
We exited the bus, sat down on the grass, popped our hats on, slopped on some sunscreen and then hopped on the course not knowing what was about to begin…
In my group there were four people, Isla, Pippa, Izzy and I, we decided to be called ‘The Fuzzy Four’;
I ( respectfully) grabbed the hula-hoop from the kind gentleman and waited until we could start the task.
After two groups before us The Fuzzy Four finally set off into the sunset never to be seen again…
But we were seen doing the course eight-and-three-quarters-times , although we were about to do nine we got told it was time to leave by the nice ladies.
Our challenges for the two year ⅚ classes (Rm 21 and Rm 19) were, climbing over a big pile of tyres, crawling under a big green net, Big professional hurdles that we went under, jumping in tyres that were all shapes and sizes, jumping off a cattle truck onto a high jump mat/ mattress (or whatever you want to call it), Scaffolding and then climbing down stairs, thin plastic tunnels that we had to crawl through, a wooden fence that you could go under, over or even through the middle, Zig zag cones and a spider webb thingy which I just ran past. The last few things were benches that you had to crawl / roll under and post padding.
After doing all the activities 9x I was ready to get back on the bus for a long ride home / school.

Setting up wētā motels at Pukeiti
In Term 2, the Year 6 students from Kaitake Rua and Kaitake Toru made wētā motels to help protect our local wētā. This week, Ella, Rylee, Henry and Jackson accompanied Ms J to Pukeiti to work alongside Dr Emily Roberts to set up the motels. All four students had turns to secure the motels to the trees they had selected. This was a wonderful opportunity in which CTS worked alongside our community to protect our local environment.
PUKEITI TEAM
In Pukeiti Wha this term we have been learning about and creating lots of different art. This is in connection to this term’s inquiry focus. Each week Mr Bright has introduced us to different famous artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Wassily Kadinsky, Andy Goldsworthy and Claude Monet. We take the time to learn about these artists and look at all their different pieces of art. We then got the chance to create our own masterpieces based off of a famous artwork of the artist. We have really enjoyed learning about different kinds of art as well as having the opportunity to use different methods and materials. Here are just some of the pieces of art that we have created over the course of this term including Van Gogh’s ‘The Starry Night’, Kadinsky’s ‘Square with Concentric Circles’ and Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’. We hope you enjoy them.

Early Reading Together Workshops
We had a fantastic group of parents join Mrs Madden and Delwyn in the library for 3 workshops. The focus was on supporting early literacy development at home through sharing books, songs and rhymes.
The feedback from parents was extremely positive and we hope to run similar sessions next year.
Reading regularly to your child and sharing rhymes and songs is one of the best ways to boost early literacy skills. Students who start school with the ability to hear rhyming words and recognise the individual sounds in words are well on their way to becoming readers and writers.
Thanks to our wonderful participants and their children who attended. Here are some important messages from the workshop...
Performance Cafe 2022
This years PC was a lot of fun. There was a feeling of whanau amongst all of the participants, and I think this brought out the best in so many of the performers. Especially the singers, of which many had to leave their comfort zone to sing in front of a huge audience.
The Mars Mellows and Firework Friends from the junior school electrified the crowd with their singing and dancing, and then Florence amazed us with her artistic dancing. Jackson was fearless and impressive with his vocals on Riptide, receiving a loud ovation.
Falling in Love With You was an amazing song, transitional in some respects. Early nerves led to a restart, and then the magic began with Kaya, Kalani, and Jackson, amongst others, just nailing it, and then carrying on with "When I was Your Man". Eleni was superb on the piano on both of these pieces.
Tyla's original instrumental piece called "The Dark" which she played on piano along with an amazing violin accompaniment from Justine. There may have been a tear or two shed.... beautiful...
The show then changed pace, full band locked in. Jade on Bass, Oliver on drums, Madison using a distortion pedal along with Kenzie on piano. The performance of Zombie was exciting, especially the way it changed dynamics. The vocals and stagecraft of Hayley and Monique added the energy that the song needed. Levi joined in for the final two songs from the band Headcase, and Oliver showed a slick and professional delivery to the crowd, which was nice to see....
Whanau Rules, that us at CTS....
