The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of September 24 - 28!
Message from the principal
Community, caring, connecting. Through the past week as we celebrated Homecoming at UHS, there were many examples of our school community coming together to show an excitement and caring for each other as the J-Hawk family. Thursday night's UHS Homecoming Street Party was a great example of this. Student Senate leaders had a vision for an event that connected UHS student clubs, sports, organizations, and activities, with youth and adults from around the community. These groups came together to offer fun, free activities for all. Hundreds of community members showed up and had fun celebrating pride in our schools and in themselves. This year they added an additional food truck as well as additional bounce house obstacle course as well as a dunk tank. Below is a picture capturing the crowd gathered just after the parade ended.
New to this year's Street Party was additional involvement of the Urbandale Alumni Association. They had a booth where people could get "instant" pictures taken by UHS Alum, Kirk McGowan. They also coordinated a new event with the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce called, "Find the J-Hawk," at local businesses.
They are a tremendous group of UHS alumni who organized five years ago to form an association so they could promote and share their mission: The mission of the Urbandale Alumni Association is to connect alumni, supporters and community by promoting a sense of pride and engaged participation through programs, education and student scholarships.
To celebrate five years in service, the association hosted a celebration at the Urbandale Senior Center last weekend, kicking off UHS Homecoming Week. Below are pictures from that event. We appreciate the Urbandale Alumni Association for their work and support for Urbandale High School!

UHS Homecoming 2018...a fun stroll through Candyland!
UHS Homecoming 2018 was filled with fun dress up days, traditional activities and new events, making it a week filled with school pride. Thank you to all of the students, staff members, and parents, who participated in Homecoming activities and/or events!
Monday featured Memeday Monday where people dressed up as their favorite meme or as something completely random for theme. Students participated in Powder Puff Football/Iron Man Volleyball later that night.
Tuesday saw lots of old folks and young people for Generation Day where Freshman and Sophomores came to school as babies and Juniors and Seniors come to school as elderly people.
UHS students and staff went to back in time for Wild West Wednesday. Connections groups also got into the Homecoming spirit with Sidewalk Chalking. Congratulations to Connections for being selected for their winning design.
Squad Day Thursday saw students come dressed in their favorite squad attire. Seniors were crowned Homecoming King and Queen at the coronation assembly on Thursday morning.
The Homecoming Street Party returned for its second year this year out in front of UHS prior to and following the Homecoming Parade. It was a huge hit with hundreds of community members in attendance for games, activities, and even food trucks.
The Homecoming Dance played host to over 750 student on Saturday Night in the UHS Commons (lunchroom). It was a sweet Candyland theme.

Becoming “world class” at something is really special. No matter the field, it’s always an awesome experience to be around people who are world class in their field.
We have an upcoming and rare opportunity at UHS to hear one of the United States’ premier military bands, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. Live. Free. Right here in the UHS Performing Arts Center. They are truly world class at their craft.
Just how rare is this appearance? “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band last appeared in the Des Moines area in 1998. Help the Metro warmly welcome back your United States Marine Band! We hope to see you there to enjoy this inspirational concert together.

Exciting changes to UHS for fall 2018 with I.E.S.!
As we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for access to teachers to support learning, UHS is rolling out some exciting changes to support students learning by adding I.E.S. (Intervention, Extension, Study table) between 3rd and 4th per
iods on Fridays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. We continue to have a modified-block schedule (8 classes on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and 4 block periods on Wednesday and Thursday along with Connections).
However, we have created time in school day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, to have guaranteed access for teachers to have with students. We are reallocating time from 5th period (in past years 11 minutes longer than all other periods in the day) along with using Connections time to create additional time on those days.
Students started signing up using an online program called FlexiSCHED on Thursdays, starting on Thursday, September 12th, during Connections for their I.E.S. time for the next three days (Friday, Monday, Tuesday). A student will attend the same location during that three day cycle and then sign up the following Thursday for a new offering for the upcoming Friday, Monday, and Tuesday cycle. This process will repeat each week.
Students will continue to review this process to sign up for I.E.S. in Connections as they sign up for I.E.S each Thursday in Connections. Students can sign up for I.E.S. sessions between 9:20am-1:00pm each Thursday for the upcoming cycle (Friday, Monday, Tuesday).
UHS to host PSAT - Wesdensday, October 10
The PSAT will be given at UHS on Wednesday, October 10, from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm. This is a practice test for the SAT and is also the entrance exam of the National Merit Scholarship program for students in the class of 2020. The test is available to any junior, sophomore or freshman student, with priority given to junior students who register by October 2nd.
The PSAT is also the entrance exam for the National Merit Scholarship program. Juniors who score in the top 3% nationally (approximately) are entered into the National Merit competition. This is one of the highest academic honors a student may receive. This link provides more information: National Merit Scholarship Program
*The SAT is a different test than the ACT. The majority of our students take the ACT rather than the SAT. Both are standardized exams that 4-year colleges and universities require for admittance. Here is a link that describes the differences between the two tests: ACT vs. SAT Comparison
Freshmen and sophomores will be placed on a wait-list and will be notified on October 3 whether or not they will test. The cost is $17, payable by cash or check to UHS. Seating is limited.
All students desiring to test should register with Mrs. Gibson in the counseling office as soon as possible. See your counselor with questions.

J-Hawk football rolls in Homecoming victory! DeKruyf shoots 77 at Cooper Creek!! J-Hawk runners have strong showing in Indianola!!! Volleyball senior night on Tuesday!!!!
Coach Anderson's J-Hawk Football team posted a convincing 49-6 Homecoming victory Friday night over Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln! Both sides of the ball were dominate as well as special teams, highlighted by Lucas Strain's punt return for a touchdown! Great job, J-Hawks! They take on West Des Moines Valley on Friday at Valley.
In a varsity golf meet at Cooper Creek in Altoona last week, UHS sophomore golfer, Grant DeKruyf tied for 7th, shoting a score of 77 in 18 holes. This represents the best individual score by a J-Hawk golfer in recent years (picture below of DeKruyf). Congrats to Grant and good luck to Coach Henkenius and the boys golfers as they compete at districts and conference in the upcoming weeks! Keep those low scores coming in!!
Congratulations to the Boy’s Cross Country Team for their 6th place finish out of 15
teams last night in Indianola. The team was led by Payton Marrs 1st, Sam Schweizer12th, and Anthony Moran 13th. The JV team was led by Nahom Clark in 8th place. Great work!
Come out to the South Gym on Tuesday, September 25th, to cheer on the UHS Volleyball team as they take on Johnston at 7:30pm. Prior to the game, help us honor our seniors for senior night. Good luck to Coach Baethke and the J-Hawks!!

Special "shout out" to the UHS student body!
Here's a big "shout out" to the entire UHS student body for showing your spirit and supporting each other in so many ways this past Homecoming week! Keep up that support for each other and those around our community as we move on throughout the rest of the year. Whether it be helping a friend in the hall, picking up for someone at lunch, giving to important causes like Combat Hunger (coming up the week of October 15th), or supporting a classmate with their learning, continue to support and lift each other up!!
Below this is a picture from Friday night's crowd at the game. Keep up the great work!
