Brief Bio

Sigmund was an Austrian neurologist who lived in Freiberg , now know as the Czech Republic. He was famous for developing the theories and techniques of psychoanalysis.

Denfense Mechanism

Repression-An unconscious mechanism employed by the ego to keep disturbing or threatening thoughts from becoming conscious.

- during the oedipus complex aggressive thoughts about the same sex parents are repressed.

Denial-Involves blocking external event from awareness. If situation is to much to handle , the person refuses to experience it.

- smokers may refuse to admit that smoking is bad for their health.

Displacement-Satisfying an impulse with a substitute object.

- frustrated by his/her boss at work may go home and kick the dog.

Projection-Involves individuals attributing their own unacceptable thoughts,feelings and motives to another person.

- might hate someone but superego tells that hatred is unacceptable.

Regression - Movement back in psychological time when one is faced with stress

- child may suck or wet bed again , when needing some time in spent in hospital.

Sublimation-Satisfying an impulse with substitute object. In a socially acceptable way.

- sport is an example of putting emotions into something constructive.

Psychosexual Development

Oral:the mouth- sucking , swallowing , etc.

Anal:the anus- withholding or expelling faeces
