Greetings from the Principal
Dear Riverview Families,
Welcome back from Spring Break! Flowers are beginning to bloom and the days are getting longer (and warmer, thank goodness!). Whether you were traveling or taking it easy at home over break, hopefully the rejuvenation will get you through the final quarter of the school year!
Looking back, our last few weeks before Spring Break were full of events that benefitted Riverview students. For example, through the Math Night funds raised, we were able to put the money toward purchasing an online subscription to PebbleGo.com, which has impressed teachers and engaged students as they utilized the website last quarter during a free trial period. PebbleGo (and PebbleGo Next for older grades) makes research accessible and interesting to students K-5 through its database of relevant topics. PebbleGo helps students develop a foundation of research skills through providing leveled text, spoken-word audio, text highlighting, and audio/video media on a variety of topics tied to the Kansas College and Career Readiness Standards (KCCRS). Be on the look-out for log in information for PebbleGo from your classroom teachers.
Students and 5th grade families were also treated to a fantastic 5th grade music performance and art show on the last day before Spring Break! Exploratory teachers Ms. Kellogg, Mr. Hodges, Ms. Robbins, and the 5th grade students worked very hard in developing a stellar music program and art show. The amount of hard work and talent displayed by students was truly impressive! All of Riverview was able to watch the performance in the afternoon, and students were enthralled and delighted with the dancing, singing, acting, instrumentation, basketball choreography, and light shows. This positive experience will surely remain a favorite memory for 5th graders when they think back on their time at Riverview.
Looking forward, we still have much to be excited about during 4th quarter! This week, Riverview begins offering breakfast on Tuesday morning (8:30 am) and Thursday is Sutera's Fundraising Night for the PTA. It's hard to pass up an excuse not to cook!
While state testing occurs for grades 3-5, learning will continue, and there are still many projects and units that will excite and motivate students this quarter. On behalf of our staff, thank you in advance for your continued support in all that must be done for students to achieve at high levels. Whether it is providing a balanced breakfast, ensuring children get enough sleep, or helping students with homework and practice, we all appreciate your strong parent support. It is clear that all stakeholders are committed to students reaching their full potential! Thank you for all you do!
Make it a great week!

Ready to Go Time-- State Assessments
New Standards; More Rigor
All Kansas school districts are required by the State Department of Education to fully implement the new standards with the 2014-2015 school year.
- Standards for success. The new standards in Math and English Language Arts work to ensure our students are ready for college, career training, and the workplace.
- Consistent and shared. Kansas, 44 other states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Schools have adopted the new standards.
- Providing opportunities for meaningful information and feedback. The assessments will measure the standards and provide meaningful feedback to teachers and principals to help more students succeed.
Beginning this spring, the Kansas State Department of Education will test students on the standards through a brand new State Assessment program. While this implementation is a significant shift for the State of Kansas, we are confident that our students, over time, will succeed in meeting the new KCCRS. Our schools have updated curricula and resources to support individual students in achieving academic excellence.
Sample Assessment Questions
There is no better way to see how Kansas is changing the state assessment program than by comparing previous questions to the new questions aligned to the rigor of the Kansas College & Career Ready Standards. Continue to the next page for the example. Learn more! We have much more information about the new state standards, the Kansas Assessment Program, and how we have prepared.
