A Message from Mrs. Franciosa...
The Popsicle Social was a wonderful event! So many of our families came out to enjoy each other's company, terrific weather, and a sweet treat. Thank you to our Home & School for organizing the event and to all the staff who volunteered to hand out the popsicles.
We had many new faces at our Home & School meeting on Wednesday evening. We hope many more can join us for our next meeting on October 20th.
On Friday, October 14th Home & School will be hosting our Little Viking Fun Run. Please look for more information later in this email. The company 99 Pledges is utilized to organize the pledges for the Fun Run. If you do not want your email shared with the company, please email Mrs. Harp at dharp@pvsd.org by Wednesday, September 21st.

Our Fabulous 5th Graders
September 2022
It’s a new year and there are already so many exciting things happening in 5th grade! Students kicked off their first weeks of school by receiving their brand new chromebooks, complete with touchscreen and stylus! These new devices will definitely be put to good use throughout the school year and we are so excited to finally have them in the hands of our fifth graders!
Students kicked off science this year by completing a fun challenge “Saving Fred” where the kids worked together in small groups to practice their problem solving skills. Their goal was to get Fred, the gummy worm, back into his capsized boat while wearing his life vest. Everyone had a blast participating and a few groups were successful in their rescue mission. This was an awesome introduction activity that hopefully has your child excited about their science lessons and looking forward to their upcoming unit on Engineering.
Our fifth graders have also been practicing their email etiquette skills in Language Arts! They have learned the do’s and don’ts of writing emails to their teachers, reviewed examples and crafted their own emails to show what they know!
In the upcoming weeks our fifth grade students will be completing some beginning of the year testing--F&P and DIBELS assessments. These initial assessments will help teachers better understand where students are academically as well as determine their reading levels and areas where additional support is needed. These will take place during the W.I.N period (What I Need!)
We are looking forward to a great school year together!

Evergreen Library Birthday Book Program
The Evergreen Library would like to introduce everyone to a wonderful program running in the Library – our Birthday Book Program. Through this program families can donate a book to our school library in honor of your child’s birthday. This allows you to do something special for your child and our school at the same time.
When you purchase a book with this program, we will do the following:
Put a special bookplate in the front of the book with your child’s name.
Present the book to your child during the closest scheduled library session to his/her birthday.
Check out the brand new book for your child to take home first and share with you.
In short, we will do our best to make your child feel special!
If you are interested in participating in this program, please fill out the form that came home or click here and return the form to school. We will start presenting books in October. If your child’s birthday is in June, July, August, or September we will celebrate on his/her “half-year” birthday.
The cost of an average library book including special binding, processing, and shipping, is $20.00. We ask for this monetary donation from you, rather than a book donation. You may help us select the interest and grade level of the birthday book. We would prefer to select the books, as we know what we already have and can usually get a sturdier binding for hardback books that withstands multiple circulations.
If you participate in the program, we will contact you several weeks before your child’s birthday to let you know which book we have chosen for your child’s birthday donation. We would prefer to have payment included when you sign up. This will greatly simplify the process for us, and allow us better advantages for ordering. However, if you choose to participate in the program and would like to send payment later, that will be fine, too!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email. Thank you for your consideration of this program.
Thank you!

Flexible Instructional Days (FID) in 22-23
The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) approved the use of Flexible Instructional Days (FID) as an alternate form of instruction in response to inclement weather or other emergencies. On a FID day, instruction will be virtual. FID assist schools in meeting the required 180 student days. PA Schools may use up to five (5) FID per school year - in PVSD, we will utilize FID when all 3 inclement weather days built into the district calendar are used.
