What is a book tasting?
A book tasting offers a variety of genres, authors, and types of books to students. It gives them a “taste” or exposure to books they may not have selected for themselves. The purpose is to encourage, excite, and motivate students to become active readers.
Stop by the STARBOOKS CAFE (Sunflower Library) during conferences this week to explore student choices and to enter to win a Starbucks Gift Card!
Come meet Mr. Prall at his instrument "petting zoo"!
GUM DAY on Tuesday, October 22
On Tuesday, October 22, the Student Council will sponsor a Gum Day.
.
We will sell 1 piece for $1.00 or 2 pieces for $2.00. The student can also bring their own gum and still pay $1.00. The passes will be sold first thing in the morning on the stage. All of the proceeds from the gum sale will go to support our Sunflower Eagle fund that is used to help Sunflower families in need.
With the purchase of the gum pass, that student will receive a special stamp on the hand and be allowed to chew gum throughout the day.
In order for this event to be a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone, we have two expectations. Our expectations for the gum include: the gum is to be in your mouth or in the trash (we don't want any gum to find its way to the floor, desks, or walls) and if the gum is being played with, the student's pass will be removed for the day.
Thank you for your continued support of our Sunflower Eagle fund at Sunflower!
STEM/MATH NIGHT on Tuesday, October 22
socktober sock drive sponsored by the pto
Bring those socks in and drop them into the wooden toy box sitting on the stage!
SPIRIT WEEK COMING UP WITH COSTUMES ON OCTOBER 31!
Our Fall Parties will be here soon and this year each student is welcome to wear a costume...with a bit of a vocabulary twist.
We are asking students to put on their thinking caps and ponder (think, consider) what underutilized (not used often) vocabulary words describe their costume. What costumes would portray the word MONSTROUS? or DAINTY? or ALOOF?
Student lessons in the LIT LAB will help generate just the right word for their character. You can help at home by simply DISCUSSING vocabulary that describes the costume your child will be wearing. We will be creating the signage at school. No Costume? No worries! We can find a word for each student.
We are excited for this magnificent (impressive, splendid) opportunity that will both astound (overwhelm and stun) and delight (enjoyment and joy) while making words MEMORABLE!
Please follow these costume guidelines:
- Costumes must be appropriate for school. At Sunflower, we serve students from three-years-old (Early Childhood) to 4th Grade. Horror and gory costumes are not appropriate for school. A good rule of thumb is to consider if a three-year-old would be frightened by a costume. If so, then it should not be worn to school. Thank you for your help in keeping our costumes appropriate for a school setting.
- Costumes and accessories resembling weapons or weapon look-alikes are prohibited at school. This includes plastic/fake knives, swords, guns, spears, etc. and any item that resembles a weapon.

BODY VENTURE SIGN UP GENIUS (repeat)
Many of you may remember back in 2017, we hosted BODY Venture, a traveling exhibit from the Kansas State Department of Education. This unique program designed to encourage students to make healthy choices consists of a 45-foot by 50-foot walk-through exhibit representing the human body. http://bodyventure.org/BVMenus/Home_BV.html. It was an amazing day for Sunflower students...one that many of them still talk about!
Your expertise is needed at Sunflower Elementary School as we prepare for BODY Venture once again! Mrs. Engemann has reserved it for us on Tuesday, October 29!!
Please consider one of the following ways you can get involved:
Monday, October 28 from 3:45 – 6:45 pm, we need 12-15 adults to set up the exhibit in our gymnasium.
Tuesday, October 29: We need station presenters at each of the 13 stations. A script will be provided. The only requirement is enthusiasm for working with students! You can volunteer for ½ day or a full day. Please specify the times that you CAN be here on the Sign Up Genius.
Tuesday, October 29: Beginning around 1:45 pm, we need 12-15 adults to help with “take down,” in order to load the Body Venture truck and send it on its way to another school.
Please consider getting involved in this fun, educational experience. Just click on the link below to access our Sign Up Genius.
Site Council
The Sunflower Site Council will be meeting at 6 pm in the library on the following dates: 9/17/19, 11/12/19, 2/11/20, 4/14/20.
All meetings are open to the public.
Kansas schools are required to establish site councils composed of the principal, teachers and other school personnel, parents, business representatives, and other community groups.
Site councils have a responsibility to provide advice and counsel in the following areas: evaluating district and school performance goals and objectives, determining methods to meet those goals and objectives, and other areas as requested by the board of education.
Remember, the work of the site council is advisory only; it makes recommendations, not decisions.
