A Day in the Life

If you follow me on Twitter you may have noticed that I spent yesterday following an eighth grade student. Each year, I choose a student from a different grade to follow over the course of a day to see CMS from the inside. Not only is it a lot of fun, it is incredibly informative. I learn a lot about our school and the work being done with students. A few highlights from my day:

  • We need new lockers! Or more organized students. Watching my student shove her items in and have to kick, shove, and finagle the locker door into place was a feat in itself.
  • Half of school day seems to happen between classes. Meetings are made, events discussed and information shared. Apparently I looked enough like a student that they didn't notice me in the halls (this info is being stored for future reconnaissance purposes).
  • Our students are grappling with some high level content. In history we were discussing Natural Philosophers versus Classic Republicanism and it's impact on our government, in ELA we were looking at Edgar Allen Poe stories for literary devices before writing our own endings, math was all Pi and it's uses, chorus was music theory, proper form and modulation, and critical analysis of singing. And there were three other classes as well!
  • Lunch is amazing (and very late in the day) the social dynamics and conversations were fun and complicated. Again, so much less noisy at table level. Our new cafe tables are much better - we need more!
  • And her day continued long after the final bell.

All in all, I was exhausted! Being 13-14 takes a lot more energy than I have anymore! It was an amazing day and I encourage you to ask your kids what they did to day and push them past their "nothing" response! I can tell you they did so much more!

Rocket Club is Back!

The Rocket Club is an after school club for students interested in learning more about the science, technology and engineering involved in designing and launching rockets. Students will be working with Ms. Bernritter (STEM teacher) and Mrs. Collins (7th grade science teacher) to design, build and launch two different types of rockets.Students will also further their understanding of the engineering design process and scientific method and how both are used in the real world to explore and improve our lives.

CRadles to Crayons Clothing Drive

It's time to clean out those closets! The Coakley Middle School is collecting new and gently used clothing for children and young teens. We are looking for youth sizes for shirts, pants, winter clothing, and any other clothing appropriate for a Middle School Student and Younger. If you have items to donate you may drop them off at the main office or send them in with your student. The Drive helps to support impoverished children.

The grade level that collects the most items earns an electronic lunch!

Yankee Candle Fundraiser

Thanks to everyone that participated in the fundraiser. If you forgot to order (like me) you can still order online and 40% of those sales will also be contributed to CMS! Happy Shopping! We have already raised over $1000 for our student accounts! Thanks for the support

2019-2020 Budget Info

There is been a lot of information going around about the upcoming budget for the next school year. If you would like the facts about the proposed budget for the override and information on the budget without the override, please check out the school committee budget page on the NPS website linked below.

New Library Reading Area Fundraiser

The PTO is sponsoring a school wide request for funds to create a comfortable reading area in our school library. We will be adding a space with sift chairs, cozy benches, a rug, and other items to entice reading! We have already had a seed donation from Big Y Supermarket for $3500 to get us started! The $13, 000.00 would allow us to make over an entire section of the library for students use. Below is the link to make a donation - feel free to share it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the like! CMS is working to make our library the place to be!
