HMS Bearcat Bulletin

July 2017

A Note from Ms. Buschmann

We are now less than a month from the start of school. I hope that news generates as much excitement for our staff and students as it does for me! I have enjoyed the flexibility of the summer schedule to re-energize as well as to do some learning, organizing, and planning; and I found some time to take a couple of short trips. I hope your family was able to do the same, but I'm ready to have kids back in the building.

For those of you new to this district, building, or just this newsletter; toward the beginning of each month, I will publish the Bearcat Bulletin to help you keep up with news from Hermann Middle School. Special event flyers and invitations will also be sent using this tool. More frequent news can be found on our Facebook page (the link is below in the contact section) and on the announcements section of Infinite Campus. Sometimes the newsletter gets long, but it is packed full of helpful articles and usually some great pictures.

HMS Supply List

The supply list should be available in local stores and will be in your enrollment mailing coming soon, but I have included it just in case you need a head start.

5th and 6th Grade Families

Last year, the Gasconade County R-1 School District initiated the first phase of its 1:1 computing program by issuing Chromebooks to all 5th grade students. As a district, we learned much from this endeavor. It allowed us to see the transformation of learning in the classroom, try new things as educators, challenge our students individually, and to see the need for direct instruction for the care of technology. Using last year as a model, and researching best practices of school districts across the state, we have developed additional guidelines for Chromebooks as well as an insurance policy.

This year, 6th graders will retain the Chromebooks they were issued last year and incoming 5th graders will be assigned a Chromebook. Gasconade County R-1 School District requires insurance to be purchased each year before a student can pick up his or her Chromebook. The District Insurance is a premium of $10 per school year. The coverage takes effect once payment is received, and the Chromebook is issued to your student. The program fee is non-refundable, and does not transfer to the next school year if the insurance is not used. The insurance program fee is designed to help cover the cost of out-of-warranty repairs and alleviate some of the financial burden of the family for computer maintenance and repair up to the total cost of the device ($200).

The full guidebook and description of the insurance can be found here: Gasconade County R-I Schools Chromebook Handbook

There will be a meeting at open house from 6:30- 6:55 for all 5th and 6th grade parents to review the Chromebook policy and insurance program. Fees will also be collected at this time.
