I Don't Remember That from my College Courses....
My realization that I wanted to be in education is a string of somewhat serendipitous and at times sad events that made me realize something like "WOW! These teachers and staff that have surrounded me really care for me and want to help take care of me." It made a connection that led me to where I am at.
Making that connection with some students is all in all, easy. Then there are a few where it takes a little more work, but you get there. This year, however, I have run into several situations where I can adequately say that college did not prepare me for and I am not positive that it could have. In our training, experience trumps all. This would be where we can all lament about not learning anything in our coursework; instead it was all learned in the student teaching experience.
You may or may not know that we have a student that speaks American Sign Language (ASL) in our building. He is a wonderful young man full of energy. If you get a chance to sit down and chat with him, please do. His main interests are drone racing, cars, and technology related gizmos. He and I get along great because of this.
I have had several opportunities to chat with him this year. Building positive rapport is taking a lot more time (the response to my jokes is delayed about 30 seconds), but I think it is a fruitful endeavor. We have a lot to learn from each other in the next three years. I find that chatting with him is a great reminder that we are never done learning something new. Before he came to our school I had not had the opportunity to haver a lengthy conversation through a third party. Not only does it help me develop my patience, it is helping me understand a lot more about the field of education, the IEP process as a whole, and, believe it or not, our political process. Think of all of the subtle cues that aren't shared through a third party! The coursework in college was great, but the things you get to do within a school really can't be replicated. You never know when you will impact someone's life goals; my teachers sure didn't.

The Mitchell Middle School Show Choir!
Have you seen our MMS Show Choir perform? The filled the floor of the PAC last Friday night. Many of our students work hard to perform in small groups, large groups, or solo and it showed! The theme was "At the Movies" and they nailed the songs and added a little of their own flair to make them pop!
