TBAISD Data Team Update

TBAISD implemented a data team beginning in April 2019. The team consists of Chris Nuckels and Christina Hay. Chris has 11 years experience in schools and was the computer technician for Buckley Community Schools before becoming a computer technician for TBAISD. Christina is a certified Pupil Accounting Specialist and has completed the PowerSchool District Certification Program. She was the pupil accountant for Fenton Area Schools for 15 years as well as the district’s PowerSchool Administrator for 10 years. Christina has been a member/presenter for MPAAA for 15 years. We look forward to using this increased capacity to further support PowerSchool and its connected systems.

PowerSchool 19.4

The big update this summer for PowerSchool was moving all servers to 19.4. There are a number of enhancements, but a few highlights are:

  1. Teacher can now copy grades from a dropped class into their own. This will really help when a student switches sections mid year by allowing teachers to move the students grades with them.
  2. There are enhanced attendance screens for secretaries to use that speed up the process for entering attendance for that day.

Upcoming PowerSchool Trainings:

If you have recently hired or have brand new clerks or secretaries joining your staff that would benefit from a PowerSchool basics training we will be offering a full day of training at the REMC Lab @ CTC in mid-August. This training will prepare them for the general tasks of enrolling, dropping, updating and searching for students. We will cover reports, recording attendance, student schedules and maintaining student/staff information. We hope you will encourage your new staff to attend this very important training.

July PowerSchool TechTidbit:

When in PowerSchool and you see a blue highlighted text (such as a student name) indicating a hyperlink. You can hold down the control key and click the text and it will open in a new tab.

For additional information about the data team please contact Chris Nuckels at cnuckels@tbaisd.org.

Phone Systems & E911

We are implementing network-based phone systems in Forest Area and Benzie this summer. Based on open-source technology and Internet-based phone trunks, these systems cost a fraction of proprietary systems.

The same technology is already being used successfully in Kingsley, Buckley, Elk Rapids and Northport in addition to several districts outside of our region. These systems bring each district into compliance with Enhanced 911 regulations that take effect at the end of 2019.

If you have additional questions about E911 please contact your Building Technician or Grant Blesma gblesma@tbaisd.org

Power Backup Enchanced

We recently completed a competitive bid process for the purchase of Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units. These battery packs keep network equipment and servers running during power outages. This maintains the function of critical systems such as phones. The purchased units replace aged units throughout our infrastructure to increase service time during lengthy outages.

We also will keep two of the units charged and ready to take to districts that are pass-through sites for network service to other districts. This will increase the up-time of services to districts that may still have power at those times. While the Administration Building has a generator that can maintain service indefinitely, this purchase will increase network resiliency at all other locations that are dependent on our services.
