February 10, 2023
Dear CVU Community: The opening for Celebrations goes to Chris Smith this week. He has been instrumental in planning Community4Unity on February 24. He describes the day below:
On Feb 24, the last school day prior to break, students will spend the day learning together and playing together. The morning will feature an opening ceremony for all in the Gym. It will feature both current students and graduates discussing and reflecting on building and creating an inclusive community. After the Opening Ceremony, students will attend two sessions of their choice in the morning. Sessions will be a little less than one hour each. Closing for the C4U portion will be handled by Sue and Joe Hoeppner who will lead discussions with students in the Theater.
The afternoon will be devoted to playing together as part of the Winter Carnival. Our hope for the day is that students are able to learn about ways to create a more inviting and inclusive community, reset their approach to dealing with those in our community who have different ideas, and relax and play together in the afternoon.

The CVU Art Department is proud to announce an exhibit of AP Art and Design student work at the Dorothy Alling Memorial Library in Williston, Vt. In AP Art each student plans and pursues a sustained investigation exploring a self-identified question or concept. They create 10-12 final pieces of art throughout their visual investigation. In this exhibit students have selected one piece from their sustained investigation portfolio work. The show will run for the month of February and is an added reason to visit your local library.

The Riley, Carey, and Brown advisories were guests of the LaPlante advisory for a Friday C3 Mario Cart tourney and ping pong games.
CVU students participated in the 45th Latin Day at UVM’s Davis Center on Monday. We had students engaging in testudo battles, a skit about Nero’s reign, various tests on grammar, history and mythology, tours of special collections and inscriptions around UVM, Olympic inspired events and recitations. Our own Frankie Fidler mesmerized the crowd with his recitation of Marcus Antonius’ eulogy for Julius Caesar from Shakespeare. We are proud of our overall 2nd place finish for the day. The projects, enthusiasm and toga clad participants were wonderful to see post a two year hiatus due to the pandemic. Latin Day is officially back and CVU students are gearing up for next year.
Rooted Organizing Committee (ROC) is planning a bottle drive for Monday the 13th after the Super Bowl. ROC is a youth-led organization that supports resettled communities in Vermont. We plan to raise money to create opportunities to engage with refugee students through fun and safe activities. Members of ROC will visit select neighborhoods to collect bottles. Neighborhoods are seen on the attached flyer. If we are not coming to your neighborhood and you would like to donate, please contact me personally: Charliejennings@cvsdvt.org
CVSD Strategic Planning: Draft Plan Elements and Survey for Feedback
The CVSD Strategic Planning committee has drafted some elements of the plan and is seeking input from all community members. That includes parents/caregivers, those without children in our schools, faculty/staff, and students.
Equity Audit: As you all are aware, CVSD recently completed a district Equity Audit in the fall of 2022. One of the first recommendations from the audit is for CVSD to create a shared vision/ understanding for Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) work at CVSD. In order to create this shared understanding, district DEI coaches have gathered input from faculty and staff at each school. This input, along with the equity audit results, will be used by the DEI team to create a draft document of a shared vision for DEI work in our district. The shared vision draft will explain the focus of CVSD DEI work and provide collective definitions. We would like to form a district wide community committee to give us additional input and feedback on the shared vision draft. We hope to have 17-20 members on this committee, including teachers, students, parents, community members, support staff, and administrators. We are planning on forming the committee by the end of January, sharing the draft document with the committee by February 1 and then holding a 2 hour, hybrid meeting in mid February for committee members to share feedback. We will try to provide childcare during this meeting. If you are interested in participating on the committee, please contact CVU DEI coaches Christina Deeley (email@example.com) or Bageshree Blasius (firstname.lastname@example.org.)."
