District News
As we approach Monday, April 8, our community eagerly anticipates a remarkable solar eclipse. This awe-inspiring phenomenon occurs when the moon moves between the Earth and the sun, casting a temporary shadow. Safety is paramount and we want to remind everyone to refrain from looking directly at the sun. AAS-approved Eclipse glasses will be provided for elementary students. You will learn more about the activities planned for their class on Monday from your student’s teacher. You also should have received a letter from your school last week with opt out instructions. As we prepared for Monday’s events, we had conversations with our students about the importance of safety. As our partners in education, we ask that you also speak with your child about this event and the importance of not looking directly at the sun. Experience art as a family! Join P-CCS for an hour of exploration of color and create butterflies using popular watercolor techniques on Thursday, April 11. This free class welcomes students of all ages and will be led by local artist Alessandra Lipman. Participants will create a beautiful piece of art to take home. No experience required. Spaces are limited, so please make every effort to attend if you sign up. Session A: 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Session B: 6:45 - 7:45 p.m. Where: West Middle School Cafeteria, 44401 W Ann Arbor Trail, Plymouth, MI 48170 Register for Watercolor Butterflies here! April is Autism Acceptance Month. In 1970, the Autism Society started National Autistic Children’s week, which would later become Autism Awareness Month. Autism refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism impacts an estimated 1 in 36 children in the United States today. In 2008, Autism Speaks launched Autism Awareness Month which grew to become a comprehensive initiative to raise awareness and promote acceptance and understanding of individuals with autism. In 2021, the Autism Society renamed the month Autism Acceptance Month to emphasize the importance of inclusion and acceptance of individuals with autism. Please view our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion newsletter to see a list of resources that may be helpful as we observe this month. https://www.smore.com/n/3y9eu-diversity-equity-inclusion Mark your calendars for the Third Annual P-CCS Mental Health & Wellness Fair on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Kellogg Park (Downtown Plymouth). Join us as we work to crush the Stigma of Mental Health with this free, interactive fair for families of all ages. Students and families can enjoy a day full of fun activities, meet Community Mental Health Experts and local businesses, and focus on your mental health and wellness. This year’s event will feature more than 90 mental health and wellness booths, a Creation Station, Chair massages, raffles, therapy dogs, the Family Fun Zone, free food, music, a carousel and a petting zoo. For more information, please visit our website at P-CCS Mental Health Fair 2024 Plymouth-Canton Community Schools is happy to announce that kindergarten registration for the 2024-2025 school year is open for all students living within district boundaries. P-CCS offers an exceptional and innovative education to students of all ages. The district is committed to developing capable, involved citizens who recognize that they are citizens of the world, use critical thinking skills, and are lifelong learners. P-CCS offers traditional Kindergarten and Young 5s Kindergarten (Y5K) for students who will turn five years old on or before December 1. Following the Michigan Academic Standards for Kindergarten, Y5K students will have the opportunity to move to first grade or remain at the Kindergarten level following the completion of their first school year with a recommendation from their teacher. The recommendation will be based on the level of developmental areas the student demonstrates. Both Kindergarten and Y5K classes are full-day programs, meaning their start and end times follow the elementary school schedule. For more information on Kindergarten and Y5K enrollment and preparing for the school year, check out the Kindergarten and Y5K page. Keeping students and staff safe at school is a top priority at P-CCS. As part of our work to maintain a safe environment, we have added another layer of protection with a new district wide student/visitor management system through a partnership with Safe Visitor Solutions. The system will screen and check-in/check-out all visitors. It also can be used by parents to check-in and check-out students. This system will be delivered through a kiosk located in a building's secure vestibule adjacent to the main office. Parents and visitors will be asked to sign into the kiosk, which will screen visitors against several databases to determine if they will receive access to the building. Parents and visitors will be asked to present a government issued identification card (a State of Michigan Drivers License is acceptable, among other options) which will be used to scan the barcode information on the ID. Parents are asked to ensure that the information on their identification matches what has been entered into MiStar to avoid any potential issues. This system is completely confidential and no information will be shared. School and security officials will only be notified should a scan come back with a question.
