Our Vision: To grow Catholic, Christian young people,
who are confident, connected lifelong learners, inspired by the teachings of Jesus,
and who make a positive difference in their community.
Tēnā tātou o te Whānau
Dear Family/Whānau
To grow Catholic, Christian young people who are CONFIDENT, CONNECTED LIFELONG LEARNERS, inspired by the teachings of Jesus, and who make a positive difference in their community.
It is wonderful to be back at St James' school with our fabulous staff and beautiful tamariki. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Last week we held our Meet the Teacher afternoon. I know all the children enjoyed their free sausage!
If you have any queries about your child, please don't hesitate to speak to their classroom teacher. We believe that we are very much a partnership with you. It's great to have our families back in school again and able to visit classrooms.
From our Vision:
Open communication and ongoing conversations allow family/whānau to contribute to and celebrate their children's learning in a way that is positive and supportive.
We are proud to be a Positive Behaviour For Learning School (PB4L). We use these guidelines to consistently teach the children behaviour that reflects our SAINTS values. If your child is involved in a Major behaviour incident, e.g. physical violence, you will be phoned by their teacher to discuss the incident and a way forward. Our behaviour policy guides what we do to maintain acceptable behaviour and a happy environment for all.
This policy is linked to our website.
Cultural Responsiveness: In the holidays, some of our staff began a 16 week course in Maori language, Te Ahu o Te Reo. The course is total immersion so we needed to show plenty of our SAINTS values such as perseverance, strive, nurture, and integrity! Other staff are enrolled for the term 3 and 4 intake.
On Friday February 17, from 5pm we are holding our annual Welcome back picnic on the back field. This is a chance to mix and mingle with other families, the pool will be open although you will need to supervise your own child. The picnic is BYO (bring your own) takeaways, and beverages, however their will be barbequed sausages available.
We would love to have some other food available. Do you or do you know of anyone who would like to bring in a food truck for the evening? If so please see me.
E te Atua e manaaki ki a koutou katoa
May God Bless you all
Christine Cosgrove

Celebrations - Celebrating Success
Welcome - We extend a warm welcome to Olivia and Kaleb, Rosanne, Zaviour and Leah, Theodore and Charlie, Rayna and Noah, Oakley who have started their faith and learning journey at Te Kura Katorika o Hato Heemi. We also extend a warm welcome to their family and whānau.
We welcome Stephen who joined staff as an experienced cleaner and will work alongside Madison.
Thank you - Lyndon and the team at the Lido Aquatic Centre for coordinating the repairs and maintenance to our school pool. This work was carried out before the end of Term 4 and included a repaint of the pool.
Danielle did something very special during the holidays.
While she and her Mum we were walking at the Victoria Esplanade looking for painted rocks, Danielle saw someone carrying a broken cardboard box ahead of us. The next moment a cat ran past us on the path and Danielle spotted four tiny kittens trying to climb up the bank; they were so little and blended in so much with the ground that they were just about impossible to see. The kittens were trying to follow their mother onto the path, away from the rocks and stream where they had all just been dumped.
Danielle and her Mum phoned the Palmerston North SPCA and kept the kittens safe away from the water and took care of them.. When the woman from the SPCA arrived at the esplanade, Danielle was responsible for directing her to where all of the kittens and their mother were and helped to put them safely inside their carrier.
Danielle has been praised for her bravery and kind heart and was told by an SPCA volunteer that if it hadn’t been for her the young kittens would likely not have made it, given that they were barely 2 weeks old. All four of them were sick and had been injured from being thrown down the bank when they were dumped. Each one has now received the medical treatment they desperately needed and are now in foster care. Danielle has been told that she will get to see them again in the next 5-6 weeks.

Getting Involved
Kidney Kids - One small way we can make life easier for others which costs us nothing, is to collect stamps, can tabs, and wine bottle tops!
You will find collection boxes for these in the School Office foyer. If, as a family you don't already set these items aside for Kidney Kids at Starship and the Missions, you may like to start, as a very visible witness to demonstrating Jesus' example of LOVE. Encourage neighbours and family to do the same. There is no deadline.
School App Advertising - If you are interested in advertising on our School App please make an enquiry to office@stjamescatholic.school.nz.
