Notes from Choir
Quizzes, Notebooks, and Vocal Testing, Oh my!
All choir students have a Notebook Turn-In on Tuesday. Notebooks are 20% of each students 1st quarter choir grade. I stressed the importance of putting your BEST on paper. Someday our children will need to fill out a job application or a college application. How do I make sure I am representing my best self on paper? They were given a 6 point rubric in class this week. Who's notebook catches my eye for neatness? I compared it to two equally matched candidates for a job- one has a flawless resume and one has a resume filled with typos. Who are you going to hire?
Next week, we will have our first official "vocal test." All students will sing an excerpt from the music we have been working on over the past quarter. This will push some out of their comfort zone and they will BE OKAY. Singing alone, in front of your peers, is nervewracking! It builds confidence, it enables me to make sure they are singing the correct part and in some cases, to make sure they are singing in the correct section. I listen for the right notes and that I can HEAR them. I even give "re-dos" to any student who wants a second chance. I absolutely love vocal testing. It is so fun to hear their growth from the beginning of the year!
