Every Student TREASURED, Every Student TRAINED, Every Student TRANSFORMED
SCCS TEACHING AND LEARNING SEGMENT
In the last Teaching and Learning Segment, I shared a slice of the time our Grade 2 teachers dedicate to literacy instruction. The time includes building foundational skills. Our elementary teachers instruct students in phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, fluency, vocabulary and oral language comprehension, and text comprehension. One curriculum resource we use is Really Great Reading. Here’s what our teachers say about that resource:
“RGR is a fantastic curriculum that systematically teaches students foundational reading and spelling skills and also prepares them for the next level of reading.* (It is amazing to watch 1st graders grow in their reading skills!)” Marcy Holwerda, Gr 1 Teacher
“Research states that direct, systematic phonics instruction is an important part of learning to read. Really Great Reading helps provide a key part of our reading instruction in second grade. Together with high quality reading experiences to develop new vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency, Really Great Reading provides phonics and phonemic awareness that are key to effective reading instruction.”
Sarah Stoub, Gr 2 Teacher
While the Really Great Reading resource helps teachers to design learning focused on foundational skills, our teachers also purposefully integrate reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language skills in their instruction. We are fortunate to have wonderful teaching resources!

If you know of a family who might be ready to start their journey at SCCS, please share this announcement with them or fill out our “Refer a Family to SCCS” form on our website. We are excited to welcome the next generation of young learners to Live God’s Story at our school!
T-SHIRT DONATIONS NEEDED
In March we will be focusing on the Throughline "Earth Keeper.” We need clean, used t-shirts for our March 8 upcycling connection group activity. If you have a t-shirt you no longer need and would like to donate, please bring it to the school office, or place it on Jill Friend’s desk in the orchestra room by March 3. Any sizes, colors or designs work, but if you happen to have a Storyline t-shirt from a previous year, we would love to repurpose it for you!
SCHOOL CALENDAR
- We will host parent/teacher conferences again before school begins so that teachers and parents can start building relationships. This year, that will be on August 17, 2023 (the same night as registration).
- The first day of school is August 23, 2023.
- We will continue to release at 2:05 PM every Wednesday for professional development.
- We continue to have the day before Thanksgiving off and 2 weeks (10 school days) at Christmas break to respect family time.
- We continue to include professional development time next to vacation breaks as much as possible, rather than days off here and there, which we have heard is helpful for family schedules.
- The last day of school is May 22, 2024 with graduation that evening.
- We have 54 extra built in hours of school (about 8 days of school) than what we are required to have by the State of Iowa should we need to use them for snow days, late starts, etc.
We look forward to 23-24 at SCCS!
TRAIL'RAISER FUNDRAISING EVENT 2023
The first Trail’Raiser Night fundraising event was held on April 11, 2015. Our new addition was still under construction and over 1,000 attendees enjoyed walking through the future music rooms, K-2nd classrooms, and office area. Plus, the gym filled to the brim for our first ever game show, the Family Feud. The event raised $110,000 for the new addition and an annual tradition was born!
We have had a total of eight Trail’Raiser Nights, alternating between auctions and game shows (Survivor in 2017, The Price is Right in 2019, Family Feud in 2022) and raising a total of $1.14 million through them!
Now approaching our 9th Trail’Raiser event, we are ready to try something a little different to help build the Blazer Center campus expansion. Our event this year is planned for Saturday, April 15, and will be a come and go event running from 9am – noon (note: Grandparents/Special friends Day is Friday, April 14).
We are renaming the event to Trail’Raiser Trek and attendees will walk a one-mile course near school and through school, ending with a delicious Blazer Brunch in the lunchroom. Before the event, businesses, supporters, parents and grandparents will have the opportunity to pledge a $.05 to $5 gift for every person who comes to the event. The more people who show up to walk, the more money we raise! If we reach our goal of $150 sponsored for each attendee and we have 1,000 attendees – that raises $150,000! If 1,250 people attend, $187,500 is raised. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase cupcakes, bars, snack mixes, event t-shirts, plus some fun new things!
We’re still working on the details, but just wanted to give you a heads up so you can reserve the morning of SATURDAY, APRIL 15 for this event!

Information and registration forms were sent home with every child in 4Care – 4th grade.
