February 15
Stage 4
Albemarle County Schools will enter stage 4 on March 15. In stage 4, Western Albemarle High School will deliver instruction through a hybrid model, including a combination of face-to-face and virtual instruction.
Students will receive face-to-face instruction two days per week and will participate in a combination of teacher-led and independent learning for the remaining days of the week.
Students with last names A-K will attend in-person instruction on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Students with last names L-Z will attend in-person instruction on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Students who attended Western Albemarle during stage 2 and 3 will attend in-person instruction for all four days.
Fridays will continue to be independent learning days. From 9:30-10:15 students who are not meeting course objectives may be required to attend academic assistance. Office hours will be from 10:15-11:00. Clubs and seminar activities will be from 1:00-2:00.
Families may elect for their child to participate in a fully virtual learning option.
If you would like to change the learning preference for your child to either hybrid or fully virtual, please contact your child’s school counselor. Decisions made on the intent form in December were considered binding, thus allowing our staff to plan accordingly. We will do our best to accommodate requests on a case-by-case basis. Please note that requests that are granted may take up to 10 school days to fully enact.

New Friday Schedule
To better meet the needs of our students, beginning this Friday we will have a new Friday schedule.
9:30-10:15: Intervention and Acceleration Period
10:15-11:00: Office Hours
11:00-1:00: Teacher Planning and Collaboration
1:00-2:00: Clubs and Seminars
The Intervention and Acceleration Period will be used by teachers to
work with individual students or strategic groups of students
focus on students who are disengaged and/or not meeting course objectives
Communicate with students and families
It is important that students make use of the intervention/acceleration period and office hours. When a teacher communicates with a student to attend intervention/acceleration or office hours, it is an expectation that the student attends.
New Grading Procedures
Missing Work Policy
Together with Albemarle County Schools, we have changed our grading policy. We strive to use balanced and equitable grading practices that provide students, families and educators with an accurate measure of student learning. Healthy grading practices encourage and support students to ensure students understand that the focus of the classroom is on learning. Our goals continue to be that students remain engaged in their learning, know they can make up missing assignments to improve their learning and grade, and have an accurate understanding of their progress and achievement level. This can best be achieved by:
We will use the MISSING designation in PowerTeacher for assignments that are not turned in. Missing assignments will be assigned a 50%.
For missing summative assessments, a zero will be entered until the assignment is completed. When a student is missing an assessment, an IG (incomplete grade) will be assigned. Summative assessments include tests, quizzes, projects, papers, and labs.
Teachers aim to provide students with timely feedback (within 1 week of the assignment being turned in).
Teachers will involve students in the assessment and grading process
Kindness Week
This week is Virginia is for kindness week
Schools can promote and foster kindness all school year. However, Virginia has recognized this week as VA Kindness Week. The purpose of kindness week is to recognize that simple day-to-day acts of kindness enable our schools, communities, and state to be a kinder, safer, healthier and more inclusive place to live, work, learn and play.
For each day of the week we are encouraging our students and staff to demonstrate their kindness. We encourage students to share their responses on Twitter and Instagram (#WAHSisforKindness)
Monday: We ask our students to use the “I can care for kindness by…” to promote discussion around kindness and recognize ways we can be kind.
Tuesday: How will you show kindness today?
Wednesday: Complete at least one random act of kindness.
Thursday: Send a motivational quote or note to a friend or a family member.
Friday: Shout out and recognize your kindness crew by recognizing educators, friends, family members, etc who demonstrate kindness.
