MJS Class of 2016
A Newsletter for All Things 8th Grade
Conferences: October 21-22
Hopefully you have been able to schedule conferences online. Here are some helpful tips to make your conferences efficient and productive:
- Check all subject area grades on Schoology before your meeting. This will help you to see which teachers you really need to conference with and what you want to discuss. If you feel like you do not need to meet with a specific teacher at this time, please cancel your appointment online so that meeting time will become available to others.
- Talk to your child about their strengths, weaknesses, and goals for each class, as well as for the year. 8th graders should be able to articulate their challenges and triumphs.
- Plan your day. You have the ability to meet with all subject area teachers and advisors. In addition, enrichment/elective teachers will be available on campus.
- If you haven't done so already, this might be a good time to schedule a conference about secondary school questions and concerns with Mr. Gill, Ms. Kelley-Lossada, or Ms. Goethals.
- Remember that teachers are always willing to schedule another time to meet with you or follow up on a conversation that requires more time than a ten minute conference. We are a team, and look forward to a great partnership with you this year.

8th Grade Reach Out: St. Francis Center
"So proud of our 8th graders getting up very early in the morning and arriving at Mayfield at 6:45am to be driven down to serve at the St. Francis Center (homeless center) in Los Angeles, to help those in need. They help serve breakfast, pass out lunch bags and talk to the community. We'll be sending 4-5 students every Tuesday morning for the rest of the year. Way to go class of 2016!!!" - Coach V, SFC Faculty Liaison
For October 13th our student ambassadors to St. Francis Center will be Kristen Asmar, Gage Detchemendy, Maddie Brooks, and Dylan Drake. For the complete schedule and more information on our Reach Out, please click here.
Thank you to Mrs. Dilbeck for your supervision of this Reach Out and to all of our parent drivers!
Harvest Festival Update
It is incredible to watch these young adults transform into the leaders of our school. From calling companies for donations to making smart decisions as a team, these teens are ultimately planning a fundraising event that will create a lifetime of memories for their younger counterparts as well as a hefty sum for worthwhile charities at our Reach Out assembly in the spring.
Thank you so much for your help and support with the Harvest Festival Raffle prizes; your generosity is heartwarming and much appreciated! Be prepared for just a few more asks... each 8th grader is asked to contribute decorations for their booth, a pumpkin, a box of sodas, and candy to sell in the Candy Booth.
