HGECC Happenings!
Winter is coming!
We are approaching one of our favorite family nights this month-WinterFest! Please make sure to RSVP to let us know you are coming. There will be crafts, activities, and more! Call the front office or send back the RSVP form in your child's backpack. We hope you can make it!
Our school staff continues to focus on modeling and teaching self-regulation strategies and skills to our students through Conscious Discipline. We talk about breathing to calm, being assertive with our friends by telling them when we don't like something, letting them know what they can do differently next time, and celebrating kind and helpful acts throughout our day. When your child does something helpful at home-try saying things like "you brought me the napkins for dinner-That was helpful!" or "You brushed your teeth when I asked you to, that was helpful!" This lets your child know exactly what they did that was helpful.
We are looking forward to some wintry activities here at HGECC as we get into the winter season. Be sure to ask your child what they did at school. Specific questions like "What center did you play in today?" "Tell me something that made you smile today." or "What song did you sing today?" are helpful and will generate more conversation with your child than just asking "how was your day?".
Thank you for sharing your precious little people with us! We have so much fun watching them grow and learn!

Attendance Reminder
Also-we are having an excessive amount of instances where children are being brought back on buses because no-one was there to get them off of the bus or they did not have their yellow bus card. Please make sure you are observing the 10 minute timeframe on either side of your drop off time (ex: if your drop off time is 4:27-be at the bus stop by 4:17 watching for the bus). It is very hard for your children to have to be brought back to school and wait for sometimes an hour to be picked up.
As a reminder-after this happens three times, bus services will be discontinued until a meeting occurs with Mrs. Collison to problem solve some solutions.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Events Coming up:
*No School-Winter Break: December 20th through January 2nd
*Back to School: January 3rd EHS back in session, January 4th all students back

Speech and Language Corner
Some kids say all of their speech sounds correctly the minute they begin speaking. Other children need more time for the sounds to develop into their speech. Here are some strategies for how to be a good speech model for your child:
*Speak slowly and deliberately – clearly articulating each sound and syllable
*Repeat key sounds and words frequently
*Let your child see how you are moving your tongue, lips, etc. as you say sounds
*Remember, auditory cues are not enough for some kids. You may need to use some visual cues to help your child process the information.
*Capitalize on naturally occurring teaching opportunities
*Practice in short spurts throughout your child’s day so he/she can have continuous chances to practice
*Praise all attempts at talking – we want our kids to want to continue to try – even if it is difficult for them!
Conscious Discipline: Did you know?
Focus on the behavior you want! Children do not always understand the word “don’t”, so when you make a request, tell them what you want them to do, instead of what you don’t want them to do. When you tell your child to do something, get down to eye level, look them in the eye, keep it simple, and focus on the behavior you want to see. Examples? Instead of, “Anthony, don’t run in the store!”, try, “Anthony, walk safely, just like this.” Instead of, “Stop hitting, right this minute!”, try, “Sarah, put your hands in your lap, just like this, so that you and your brother are safe.”
Flu Season Tips
You can help protect yourself and others from RSV infection by following a few prevention tips:
- Wash your hands often.
- Keep your hands off your face.
- Avoid close contact with sick people.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces.
- Stay home when you are sick.
