Parkhill Primary School Newsletter
Issue 8, Thursday 19 March
Dear Parents/Carers
I would like to dedicate the Newsletter today to the children and teachers at Parkhill!
Science week has been in full flow this week with children developing and using experiments, testing and making judgements across the school. The children in our 4/5/6 cohort are now well versed in gravity, mass and the solar system, in F/1 they have been learning about changes such as melting and freezing. Our 2/3 students have explored the use of magnets.
You may recall a couple of weeks ago we had an unfortunate incident where our zucchini crop was stolen from the garden. I would like to thank a member of our community who came into school and donated $150 for the garden to ‘restock’. Mr Culoso was reading the paper at the doctors and came across our article. He came straight to school with his donation. How wonderfully kind of him! Thank you Mr Culoso on behalf of the school community!
We were excited to mark National Take Action day today with children wearing a little something to make us all smile and to remind us to be kind, loyal and active in terms of friendships and anti-bullying. As a school we have worked and continue to work so very hard to develop a sense of community, inclusion and tolerance amongst students and families. The Essential Agreement work underpins all of this. Our school values are at the forefront of everything we do.
Learning still goes on…
REMINDERS:
2020 school fees (Essential Education Items) are due – if you have not yet paid this fee please contact the office ASAP. It is important to note that the school has to subsidise any fees that are not paid by families. These subsidies are paid out of our curriculum budgets.
Morning drop off: Supervision on the playground is only from 8:45am. Many children have been arriving at 8am, these children need to attend OSHClub. They are not allowed to be unsupervised and left in the playground. If OSHClub is not for you please seek other alternatives.
I have been sending daily updates regarding CoVID-19 . Please refer to the emails for information. The latest updates regarding the coronavirus issued by the DET can be found following the link below:

You can go on a boat ride to see animals like white tigers and lions. If you are lucky you feed giraffes or elephants.
There are four cool bits; Waterpark, Theme Park, Boat Safari and a cultural bit.
You can eat rolled ice-cream which is smashed ice-cream that gets rolled up.
There are NO LINES!

Penguin Parade….You’ve GOT to do this!
You get to go to Phillip Island with beautiful beaches and when it’s time for the penguin parade you get to stay up late at night. There are lots and lots of things to buy and you get to see little, cute and sometimes baby penguins.
When you go on the boardwalk penguins come up really close. There’s activities too.

It’s got life. It’s got plants. You can feel life around you. It’s beautiful. You can feel water drops on you. Its size is colossal. It’s so fun to visit. Do you want to visit a rainforest?
You can find new animals and its mind blowing. The scenery is beautiful. It’s awesome. It’s the best thing to do ever….so fun! It would be a crime not to do this. Go to a rainforest…it’s too fun not to go.

Science Week
This week in Y4, 5 and 6, students have been rotating through each of our 5 classrooms exploring space science.
Planets have been a huge focus with students looking at their characteristics, climate and location in our solar system. In addition, students have also explored weight on different planets and the phases of the moon.
Spend some time star gazing with your family during the holidays, there are many apps that assist in locating planets in our night sky.

I was sitting with one of the children this week and she was telling me she likes watching the show 911. Not something that I particularly enjoy but as she was talking about firefighters it reminded me that my husband used to be a CFA volunteer, served during Black Saturday and some other nasty fires interstate, as well as the usual local stuff. When he first started the pager would start beeping in the middle of the night and off he would go, I would sleep either fitfully or not at all until he returned. This happened for quite some time, it was new, it was risky, I felt uncertain, so many ‘what ifs’. However, as time went on, while the situation didn’t change and the risk levels were still the same, my ability to deal with his absences changed. I adjusted, got used to it, and as I did, I didn’t feel as worried anymore. I think we live in a time like this at the moment. So many new variables, information, misinformation, adjusted living, waiting and our brains don’t quite know how to process it yet. But that will come. We will find our new normal and work out how to mentally and emotionally get through the next season. Until then look after yourselves and if there is anything I can do to help you or yours at this time, please let me know.
