The American Revolution
The American Revolution
American Revolution
The securing of independence from Great Britain by the people of the 13 Colonies. Calling themselves the United State of America these people wrote a Declaration of Independence, defied the authority of their mother country, and ended up winning a war to protect that independence. The Revolution certainly ended with the victory in the War; however, the Revolution began long before that, maybe even with the settlement in America (far away from England) of people who wanted to govern themselves and who wanted to have a direct say in the way they were governed.

The Revolutionary War was fought between Great Britain, which was ruled by King George III at the time, and the British colonists in America. The colonists themselves were split, with Loyalists on the side of Great Britain, and Patriots on the side of the colonial rebels. The majority of people living in the colonies were “fence-sitters,” who were undecided on the issue.
King George
Congress voted to declare independence on July 2, 1776 and the Declaration of independent was formally adopted on July 4, 1776. The exact date that the delegates signed the Declaration of Independence has been debated, but many historians accept August 2, 1776 as the day most signatures were added to the document.
