Because Mistakes will Come....
I've had to do a lot of reflecting this week, and I figure maybe someone else may be able to benefit from some of the words of wisdom I have come across.
Mistakes—especially the ones that make us cringe long after they’ve happened—can make us feel as if we’ve taken one step forward only to take 20 steps backward. We can cripple ourselves analyzing why we made the mistake. At the end of the day, we just have to accept that a mistake was made, strive to fix it, and move on. As educators, we handle so much information and have so many interactions in a single day! As hard as we try, sometimes...things happen. When they do, perhaps thinking through the following can help:
1. Think about why you made the mistake. Assess the mental and emotional state that led up to the decision. In some cases it may be fear or fatigue. Take the time to reflect with the hope that the emotion is readily recognized in the future and can be prevented from affecting future decisions.
2. Regroup. Mistakes are inevitable. They happen to everyone. Depending on what’s going on or what has taken place, it might mean stepping away from the situation momentarily. The time away can help one let go of initial emotions and start thinking about what should be done differently next time to achieve different results.
3. Look for a positive outcome. When mistakes happen, it’s important to find a positive outcome that came from making that mistake. Bouncing back is hard, but you bounce back with more experience than before.
4. Make it right. Try to right any wrongs. This means going to anyone who was affected by the mistake and owning it. Repair any damage that can be repaired.
