Principal's Message

At Elmdale we believe that it is important for students to go outside for recess several times during the day in order to burn some energy, get some exercise and get fresh air. We find that students are more able and ready to learn with these breaks throughout the day. Please make sure that you are sending outdoor clothing for your children to wear, and remind them of the importance to dress appropriately every day for recess. As the weather gets colder it's a good time to be reminded of our Cold Weather Recess policy:

  • If the windchill is -25 or warmer, students will go outside for recess
  • Between -26 and -29 we will shorten recess to no more than 15 minutes outside
  • At -30 or colder we will have indoor recess
  • Other recess cancellations, due to weather, are at the discretion of the school principal or designate.

This fall, as the temperature was colder in the morning and warmer in the afternoons, our lost and found became overloaded with hoodies. Students wore them to school in the morning but got too warm for them throughout the day, took them off and misplaced them. Please encourage your child to check the lost and found, or feel free to stop by the school and check out the lost and found for your missing items. There are some very nice, nearly new hoodies in the bin right now!

If your child is absent, please remember to inform the school before 9:00am. Our practice is to phone all families whose children are absent without notification as soon as attendance is completed in the morning.

You can notify us by phone (204-326-3325), or by email (elmdale@hsd.ca). If you are notifying your child's teacher by email or SeeSaw, please also make sure to let the office know, in the event that your child's teacher is away that day.

Did you know you can also enter absence information on the Parent Portal? Login to your Parent Portal Account, select the child who will be absent, click on "Attendance Information" and select one of the "Excuse Absences" options at the top of the page. Don't forget to hit the "Submit" button once you've filled out the necessary information. If you do this, you do not need to phone or email the school office!

December Concerts

Students are very excitedly practicing and preparing for the upcoming Christmas Concerts.

Our grade 1-4 Christmas Concert will take place on Monday, December 19 at the Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Boulevard. For the afternoon performance, doors will open at 1:00 for parents and friends to find their seats. Students will be transported to and from the church for the performance. We ask that students do not get picked up from the church after the performance.

Similarly, for the evening performance, students should be in the church gymnasium at 6:30 to get lined up and ready for the concert. Parents, grandparents and friends should find their seats prior to 7:00 for the performance. We ask that all families make it a priority to ensure their students are in attendance for both the afternoon and evening performances.

The kindergarten concert will take place at the school on Tuesday, December 20 at 1:30. Parents, Grandparents and Friends are welcome to attend. Doors open at 1:00pm and guests can head directly to the school gym to find their seats.

A Message from our PAC

Our Parent Advisory Council is an important part of our school family. PAC is a committee of parents who advise school leaders on the needs of families within our school! PAC is responsible for hot lunches, leads fundraisers that support improvements to our playground and facilitates initiatives that celebrate staff and students.

Parents are always welcome to join our monthly PAC meetings which generally take place on the second Thursday of each month in the Elmdale School Library at 6:30pm.

We are also looking for parents to join PAC as regular members to take on some specific volunteer roles. If this interests you, we encourage you to come to our Annual General Meeting on Thursday, January 12 at 6:30pm in the Elmdale School Library.

December School Spirit Days

In the coming weeks we will be having some school spirit days. To build school community and to have some fun together, we encourage students to dress up in the themes for the following days:

December 9 - Super Hero Day

December 16 - Hat/Jersey/Sports Day

December 21 - Holiday/Christmas Sweater & Socks Day

School Entry Reminder

Just a reminder that all guests should enter the school through the Flagpole Doors and check in at the office. All other exterior doors, including the Main Street side entrance, are locked throughout the day. Exterior doors are open for student access first thing in the morning and at the end of each recess time.

Hot Lunch Reminders

Our PAC coordinates Hot Lunch every Thursday. Pizza from Little Caesar's is available for purchase, alternating between Cheese Pizza and Pepperoni Pizza for $2 a slice. Orders are placed first thing in the morning so that enough pizza can be ordered. Please note the schedule for the coming weeks:

December 8 - Cheese Pizza

December 15 - Pepperoni Pizza

January 5 - NO HOT LUNCH

January 12 - Cheese Pizza

Community Christmas

Thank you so much for participating in our food drive for Steinbach's Community Christmas. We had lots of food donated and we are excited to be able to pass that along to Community Christmas to help families in need.

Picture Retakes

Picture Retakes have been rescheduled to take place on Wednesday, December 14. Please let your child's teacher know if you'd like you would like retakes done for your child. All students who were absent on the original picture days will have a chance to have their picture taken on the retakes day.
