This Week's Note From Mr. Evan Chelman, Principal
Dear Hill-Roberts Families,
This past week, our 1st-4th-graders celebrated their 100th day of school! Monday will be our kindergarten's 100th Day! This milestone is one to be proud of. The students of Hill-Roberts have come so far and some of their best learning opportunities and celebrations ahead of them!
We also celebrate Black History Month in February. We honor Black Americans and celebrate the contributions of those who have led the efforts for true equity and justice for all. While it’s important that we, as educators and families, do this all year long, February provides us an opportunity to amplify the message and explicitly teach students that their voices and words have power and can lead to change.
The Center for Racial Justice in Education has made available the following resources to support families in teaching their children about Black History Month:
- 45 Books to Teach Children About Black History – The Culture
- African American History Month Resources for Parents – Adlit.org
- Learning More About Black History for Parents and Families – NYC Dept. of Education
- 5 ways to celebrate Black History Month with your family – ChicagoNow.com
- 8 Black History Month Books and Resources for Kids -JusticeJonesie
- Celebrating Black History and Diversity Builds Self-Esteem and Empathy -Too Small to Fail
- African American History For Kids -University of Illinois Extension
- Top 15 children’s books for black history month -Family Education
- How to talk to your child about Black History Month (A script) -Mama Knows it All
There are wonderful picture books included in these resources and our library has many other titles for students to take home this month and all year.
Stay warm and be well,
Evan
